I've got this posted somewhere else:

Before any '99+ plus people chime in on the power difference, save it. I know about PI and that isn’t the question!

My question has to do with exhaust. Whenever I browse a catalog it is always 96-97 and 99-04. Sometimes there is an entry for ’98 but many or most there is not. What could possibly be the difference in say cat back from 96,97 to ’98? It can’t be wheel size because the same 17” polished rims on my ’98 are the same as my neighbors ’97.

It is the same with intakes and what not. I love the car but it is as I say, a bastard. I’ve heard later ’98 cars have some ’99 parts perhaps. I have no idea if that is true. My car has a mfr date 0f 04/98. Anyone care to give me some reasons for this?

I think ford changed the routing of the EGR tubing in '98. My wife's Cobra has the same stigma (stepchild & fuel pump)

I've noticed that the '98 Cobra is out there too. Of course the '98 Cobra was the year they sorted out all the problems from 96 and 97! This is why it is valued. However, the '98 GT is worth as much as a truck load of dead rats in a tampon factory (stolen from the movie Top Secret)

The 99+s have 260HP the 98s have 225. Did that answer your question?

He was being sarcastic

Anyways, I don't see why exactly the exhaust wouldn't work.

im postive that its just hanger location now. i just called my friend who owns a 98. he said, that all of them for the years 96-98 will work, but you'll have to change the hanger locations. he used one for a 96-97 car, and had to cut them off of the tail pipe, and reweld them in a different spot.
so i guess you dont have to buy a 98 specific kit, but when you buy a cat back, they're porbally thinkin bolt on with no modifacations, therefore giving different years and stuff stupid like that.

I hope so!

Edit:
I don't either but tell me why they either do not exist in a catalog or are in a category on their own?

Thanks G. I can't imagine a different hanger position though. It just doesn't make sense. It isn't like the bumper cover changed or anything like that. It this part of the pre-99 change or something like that?

'98 was preparation for the '99 body styling change, so your hangars moved around compared to 96-97. nothin a little welding cant fix

So because the hanger positions were different, you got bitch slapped? I have MagnaPacks and it comes with all the hanger positions for all the years. Guess you can't adapt to the best year of that style. God forbid your wife sends you to the grocery store and you can't find the right ketchup...

The 98 Mustang uses the 99 hangers for the exhaust. I ended up putting on 96-97 tailpipes with new hangers for 96-97. The hangers only cost about $20 for the pair and screw right into the factory holes in the frame. Also the 98 uses a screwed up fuel system.

I believe Ford sells a 170 or 190 size pump for the 98s.

It's too bad the '98s didn't come with the PI engines though. To me I like the sleeker body style more than the 99-04's. That's my only beef with them!

That's exactly the problem. But like what was said, either buy a set of hangers from a 96-97 or have a new mount welded onto the tailpipe. It's just a piece of bent metal bar anyway. I would imagine a set of hangers from the 94-95's would work as well.
