wierd problem, no gas smell with vacuum off..

BUT, when I plug the vacuum back into the AFPR and the fuel pressure drops about 6psi at idle, the fuel smell comes back.. I unplug the vacuum line to the AFPR and the fuel pressure goes to 46 and it idles better, and the gas smell goes away.. STRANGE !! you'd think it would smell more like gas with 6more psi of fuel ??? it is an FTI cam..

oh, and I found out today my rings are going, I'm smokin' blue @ WOT in 3rd and 4th gears.. pretty much means my 105mph traps are as best they're getting this year...

did you check for fuel in the vac line? when the diaphrams go (in the reg), fuel gets into the vac lines. creates a nice odor.

I guess I can check for that.. its a brand new Kirbin AFPR, I heard they were the best.. I'll wait till tomorrow to check.. (dark out now)

gotcha - with your new FPR (if i were to get an AFPR, Kirban would be my choice too. nice piece!) dont sweat the gas in the vac line test. that happens on older regulators (always a slight chance there is a bad o-ring in it, but highly unlikely).

JT is probably right.

I bet the FPR is putting fuel into the intake through the vacuum line.

If you want to be sure, go to carquest or napa, and get the flourescent dye bottle, and get the fuel tank to 2-3 gallons, pour the bottle in the tank, and run the motor. A black light will show where the fuel leak is (lights up yellow/orange).

cool, I'll try that.. so, I would be looking for a leak in the vacuum hoses, or in the fuel hose?? (stupid question time)..

So, I gotta ask. When you tried it with the line unplugged, did you cap the the bung the line plugs into on the intake? If not, having a bit of unmetered air coming in that hole would have made you run leaner for a bit, until the computer sorta figured out what was going on. That might explain the smell going away .

good point, I'm tweecing my slops today and AFPR (had to raise it a bit above 39 cause of hitting max duty cycle) and I'm upping the idle (playing around with TPS > .995, I think it doesn't do anything different if you adjust the tweecer function for TPS).. but yeah, I think you're right, I won't worry about it, my vacuum checks out fine.. very strong actually considering I have the rpm2 intake..
