Will an 84/85 8.8 Rear end work on my 88 GT Vert?

Well, the title says it all. I can get a 8.8 3.73 rear end from either a 84 or 85 5.0 Mustang. I'm wondering if it will work on my 88GT Vert, but I'm guessing it will since it's an 8.8 like in my car. The 3.73 rear end also comes with traction bars, so will those work as well?

unless the rearend was swapped into the 84/85 its not an 8.8, 8.8 rears started in 86.

85 and down have a 7.5 rear

i know the 87-88 rear end will fit, it comes with 3.55s in the auto and 3.73s in the manual plus it has disk brakes on it. Good cheap upgrade!

he means a turbocoupe rearend from an 87/88, the mustang didnt have rear disc except for the svo and the cobra

Yeah, like everyone else said...pre 86 didnt have 8.8's...they had 7.5's and that feller is referring to 87/88 thunderbird turbo coupes. manuals had 3.55's and auto's had 3.73's. both had disc brakes. rearend out of the tbirds are about an inch wider to accomidate the wider bodys of the tbirds but it doesnt really matter...they'll still work.

Yeah, I figured that is what yelbigbirdlow was talking about was the T-Birds. Did any of the pre 86 come with 3.73s from the factory? The ad say 8.8 373 rear end out of an 84 5.0 Mustang. So if he did put in an aftermarket rearend, would the installation be the same for my 88GT Vert?

I can get the rearend for $75, and it is an 8.8. Will it fit right in place where my stock one would be?

Yes, if its originally from a mustang. If it isn't, then it won't have the brackets for the quad shocks.

how do you know it is an 8.8. did you run the tags or compare the size of the differential cover.

So the part that sticks out of the cover will be about 8.8 inches, right?

You can't go by measuring that way. Just look at the difference in the covers.

Alright cool guys. I have ordered the 21 gear for the speedometer and now hopefully I can get ahold of the guy and go and get it. The only bad part is that it's about 3 and a half hours away.

a lot of people misadvertize i would double check. take your differential cover off of yours and compare it to his
