Since I have decided to become a permanent resident of Georgia, I am now subject to emissions testing. I have very cruedly installed two forward catalytic converters out of a 93" Mustang GT in an obviously very temporary intermediate pipe on my car. Those are now the only emission control devices on the car. What do you guys think? Will it pass?

So your not running anything smog related? Doesn't sound like it's gonna pass but IDK much about emission laws.
Best of luck to ya though!

i say to retard the timing...fresh plugs....make sure the car is fully warmed up when it hits the machine. MSD boxes with that double spark below 3000rpm help alot too.
I get a free reinspection if it doesn't pass. If it doesn't pass the first time, I'm cutting the fuel pressure way down, pulling the spout, and dumping about 4 bottles of Heet in the tank.
No Smog pump, but I passed in my 93' GT with just a pair of cats and no smog pump before. Of course that car had a much much smaller cam in it and iron heads. Unfortunately, I let the car get up to temperature on jackstands, and the converters aren't even getting hot.

Dammit....they do testing down there? I might be moving to the atlanta/marietta area within the year.
How long can u get away with not registering the car there?
Sounds like its just a sniffer test and not visual also?
Dont have advice since i've never had to test, but good luck and keep us up to date!

it visual too. and sniffer. and it's every year.
OP: you might need the air pump to get the cats to work right. Is the egr installed? my 95 won't pass without pulling the spout.
Yes we have emissions here. I have gone 3 years with my cars still registered in FL. It is visual and sniffer.
Yes, I just have the front cats out of a 93' Mustang. I will not be spending money on cats. Whatever I find at the junk yard will have to do.

Good luck kurt, keep us up to date. Im interested in how it goes for ya!
While we are on the topic, a turbo grind will be good for emissions right? Since there is no overlap? (or very little i suppose since im not a cam genius)

Is it possible to have a tune put on a switch chip that will make the car really emissions compliant? Just a flip of the switch before you get tested? You could also gut a smog pump and just install it before the test. Have the hoses just disappear somewhere in the engine bay.
Thank god we don't have that in FL!

Yeah, a turbo grind cam would be better than most. Unfortunately, I have a big nitrous cam.
We used to have emissions in FL. State emissions in fact. I remember sitting in that state emissions line for hours letting the car load up.

ouch, just saw this part....
It is visual and sniffer.
...
i guess the visual part depends on how thorough the inspector is.
good luck

I looked up all the stuff on the state website. It's an inspection to make sure there are cats on it, and that's all. So sayith the official website anyway. It also depends on the age of the car, but I can clearly smell raw fuel coming out the back when it's running cold.

Good luck - I failed with hi-flow cats (only two converters)in Ontario with my smog pump in tact. Your main concern is that if you only have two out of the 4 factory OEM converter chambers, you are missing the first set that help build up the heat to reduce the Nitrous Oxide readings.

Theres always someone crooked out there....Pay double the inspection cost and theres shops up here in RI that will put another car on the rollers.
Ha to all yee naysayers. Passed with flying colors. I did opt to lean it out a little, and pull the spout though.

I checked some of the local boards to see if anybody knew anyone who would do that. A couple guys said they would, but when my friend went there to check them out, they wouldn't.

Glad you got it passed. I'm lucky we only do a visual test. I have my bronco straight piped so instead of spending the time and the little bit of cash, we just took some steel plating and welded it underneath and claimed it was to protect the under carriage and if they took it off they were buying a new one lol. Worked and it's still on there, came in handy a few times with off roading.
Yeah, you can also knock some old heatshields off some cats and weld them onto the exhaust pipes. Most people can't tell the difference, nor do they really care.
