I just received my Ford made in China water pump in the mail. The water pump in the car now is new and leaked right away. I took it off again and attempted to seal it. Once again it leaked right away. I took off that plate and used form a gasket and put a new gasket between plate and timing cover that second time. I even used hi tack gasket sealant to keep the gasket in place. So here we are and I want the no doubt about it absolute lock it has never failed you method of installing and sealing a new water pump on your foxbody!

Alright. The brand new ford water pump leaked right away as well. I have determined that the paper gasket is wrong... all three times apparently. The gasket between the pump and backing plate is fine. It’s the gasket between the timing cover and backing plate that is not right. I researched it and the different rotation pumps have different port directions. The gasket they supply matches the most common timing cover. Apparently my uncommon timing cover needs a different gasket. I will try gasket maker to solve my dilemna. It is really upsetting when the water pump leaks while you add coolant for the third time. Ugh!
It does... but in my research I just read that the ports can be mismatched between water pump and timing cover as long as the backing plate in use has the round holes and not the port specific cutouts. Also the gasket on each side of backing plate must match the ports. That is where I believe I failed.
You are correct, most of the water pumps have the circular holes in the back cover. If that's the case, they it matters not what direction the timing cover water ports are angled.
I assume you are trying to install a M-8501-G351 water pump? They are all made in China these days and aren't really up to par in terms of quality. No different than going to autozone really.

I meant to add more to this. Yes, the ports don’t matter to the water pump when the backing plate has round holes. The ports DO matter to the gasket and both new water pumps came with the wrong gasket for my timing cover. I am at work right now and the Daddywagon powered by a 351 windsor made the 32 mile drive. So far... so good.

Get yourself a Edelbrock HiFlow pump, the best investment. And always use permatex blue with WP's gaskets, also check to see if the 2 screw/bolts (varies upon WP vendor) aren't protruding out farther than stock. (2 screws/bolts that hold back plate onto pump) Had an issue with this one time on a pump. It created a bigger gap from WP to timing cover causing a leak on a new pump. I guess someone added there bolts onto pump and then sent back to summitracing and i ended up being the victim of there stupidity. Just swapped my original screws onto new pump back plate and was good.
