Winter Tires???

As far as winter tires, Blizzaks or the other equivalents are the best way to go. How much snow are you worried about getting through? If the most you get is about an inch at a time, you'd be fine. With the Minnesota snow that I have to get through, I'd be in a ditch with anything less than my Blizzaks.
 
I am in Kansas, so I may have to go through very little or a whole lot depending on the winter, its Kansas and nothing is consistent, however the farmers almanac is predicting a tough winter this year.

One thing I worry about is tread wear, we will go 2-3 weeks in the 40s-50s during our wacky winters, we will have snow, ice, freezing rain one day and within 48-72 hours be in the mid 40s-50s, when that happens should I swap the Blizzaks out for example to preserve tread or leave them on knowing it will be freezing again in a week to 10 days?

another vote for Blizzaks... coming from CO and having a main winter job as a snow plow operator (with only the Mustang to get me 30 miles to work ;) ) I was never let down.
 
I was formerly a Connecticut boy, and I had a set of Blizzaks on some 99-04 V6 rims, and boy, those helped out bigtime. On more than a couple of occasions, I was climbing out of places their 4 wheelers and crappy imports weren't.

My advice however, is once the snow is gone, get those Blizzaks off. They seemed to handle horribly on anything other than ice, snow, and slush... infact, I got into a minor fenderbender because of it.
 
I just picked up a set of Michelin Alpin's for my 02 GT (and 200lbs worth of sandbags), I wanted the Blizzaks but they didnt have any in stock. Anyone have any exp. with the Alpin's??
 
No but honestly you shouldn't need the sandbags. That will put a lot of extra stress on your rear suspension components. As long as you know how to drive in the snow (taking it easy), the tires are all that you will need.

I live in K.C. I just bought snow tires for my truck. I was advised to switch the tires out by April 1st. The tires will be ok to run on during the winter months even if there's no snow. Just change them out before it gets warm. Pearl02.
 
All-season tires aren't really winter tires. The only winter part about them is they have some traction when the temps get cold, but really aren't great in the snow.

Do yourself a favor and search around locally for 15" V6 rims. I picked up a set for $50. Then grab a set of Blizzacks to fit the V6 wheels. The tires will be narrower and cut through the snow a lot better. I beleive the V6 used a 205 series tire. It will help cut through the snow and the smaller footprint will put more weight of the car over the smaller surface area helping with traction.

Having a set of winter wheels and summer wheels is the way to go.

i can speak for the 15" wheels as i am just putting a set of Blizzaks on my stock wheels from here, but they are made of a special compound that stays soft in sub-freezing temps. the problem is that they are super soft when it gets warm so you have to change them out when the temps get above 40-45*

I took the Cobra brakes off around 2 months ago or so as i knew the car wasn't going to be around much longer. I wanted them for my Fox as they had the SS lines, Brembo rotors and the 40mm piston calipers. I didn't want to spend $500 to buy them again when i just traded the car in and got nothing for them.

I had the stock GT brakesback on, and if i kept the car i knew i was going to need snow tires. Luckily i never bought them before trading the car in. I only got as far as taking the original tires off the V6 rims.


Now i have a full set of V6 rims and no idea if it will clear my rear Cobra brakes on my Fox so i can use them for Drag Radials. These V6 wheels are MINT though...too bad they are the ugliest Mustang wheel around or i could get some good $$ for them


Blizzaks are snow tires. They have a special tread pattern and lots of slices that give them better bite in snow and ice. They also are made of a special rubber that retains traction at colder temps. They make a huge difference in performance, and anyone that drives in the snow should have a set. They are actually REQUIRED in certain areas in Canada.

Oh ok... The 16X7.5" V6 wheels will clear the rear Cobra brakes, but Im, not too sure about the front... My buddy ran them at the track on the rear of his 03 Cobra....

I'm in agreement that if you're going to drive your car in the winter, you need to buy a seperate (and thinner) tire and cheap-o rim set. It makes sense to do so.
