Or you need to clean the wires. If they are dirty the solder has a hard time holding. Just get some sand paper and clean them up and try again.
The solder would melt but just run over the bare wire and fall off. I have a cheapo $8 iron.
I personally use a small butane torch for soldering. It heats the wire up ridiculously fast. You can just use one of those torch pocket lighters if you want. The only thing you have to be careful of is that you don't light anything else up if soldering in a tight area, but it still beats holding an iron on a wire. Don't forget the heat shrink tubing!
and... you can light a cigar with it too, try that with an iron

Just be careful with the torch and the shrink tubing. It's easy to overheat and blister the tubing from too much heat. You'll figure out the threshold after you do it a few times.
