What is typically done when rebuilding heads during an engine rebuild??

cost??

VS the Twisted Wedges...

Trying to get a game plan together for a mild rebuild.. cheap.

E7's

It all depends on what you are wanting done... usually a valve job and surface is around 130-150.00 with new seals. Most shops charge by the hour for port work, performance valve jobs, ect..

Mild performance options and Trick flows.. is not the best way.. for the money spent, anyway. You can get 290-320 at the wheels on a set of ported GT40's or E7's. And that isnt a mild build.. Adding a set of TF to the equation, might get a few more horses, but for the extra money in cost, might not be worth it?? just a thought.

You're being extremely optimistic. 320rwhp is extremely atypical from a Ported E7. If you use E7s, I would expect more along the lines of 250rwhp.

The typical full on E7 is having the bowls cleared a lot, valve job, the exhaust ported a lot, and a mild port on the intake. Usually one takes about .040" off the bottom to get the compression up. I would say about $600 would be a conservative estimate for that amount of work.

You can definitely get more than 250rwhp with ported E7's. I've seen two combos almost identical to mine with home-ported E7's put down around 270rwhp/315rwtq through a T5, and mine put down 244rwhp through an automatic. My heads have stock valves with pocket ported intakes/exhausts, more extensive porting of the exhausts, and were milled only 0.010".
I don't think it would be optimistic to get 290rwhp from E7's that have oversize valves, a 5-angle valve grind, extensive porting, and 220cfm intake port flow.

So it looks like working my E7's would be about half as much as getting some Twisted Wedges.

I love the concept of the lost weight with the aluminum heads, however.

I'm going to be pulling my hair out over this stuff...

Right now I'm at...

Letting Tmoss port my stock lower intake

then...

A Crane 2031 with reworked E7's
VS....
A Trick Flow cam that will work properly with the Twisted Wedge heads.

That's why I called it a conservative estimate. I said 250, and then you came back with between 244 and 270, sounds about right to me.

Just get the Trick Flows already. You won't regret it.

While you might be able to coax a good HP output out of the E7's, I still believe that it's only worth porting them if you're going to do it yourself. The same goes for the stock intake. Otherwise if you have to pay someone else to do it, you might as well put that expense towards better aftermarket heads/intake instead and take advantage of the weight savings of aluminium heads.
Kurt, my 244rwhp was with an auto tranny so it probably would have been 270-275 if I had a manual.

So what match of Trick Flow Heads and Cam should I get??

I'm sure the bottom of the line would be fine for me. I would be thrilled to pull anywhere near 300 Hp...

TFS Twisted Wedge heads, Holley Systemax II intake, CompCams XE270HR-14 cam, and 1.6 roller rockers would make an excellent, well-mannered street combo that should pull strongly to 6000rpm. A nice balance IMO.

Yeah, that's what I've seen out of alot ppl's "worked" E7's.

However, I believe Thumper was referring to heads that he ported when he said 290-320. He is very good with the factory ford heads and isn't typical of what you can get at home. He also said with ported E7's or GT40's. I imagine the lower end being his ported E7's and the 320 being his ported GT40's. Of course one would have to have the correct cam, intake, etc to achieve these numbers as well.

I've seen trophy stock numbers like that with E7s and a little bit of work. But you aren't going to get that on a typical E7 port job on a street car. If that were the case, nobody would waste their money on aluminum heads. Once you start porting E7s vs GT40s, there is hardly any difference between the two. The GT40 flows like 2cfm more.
