they are d&d hawk alum 210 heads.....2.055 intake and 1.60 exhaust valves. he said they are compared to the afr 205s. What cam would work well with these? i know i will need a custom grind but i was just trying to get and idea of what lift/duration to go with

I would buy nothing from Hawk. Go AFR 205 or TFS TW track heat 205 cnc'd head. Go with proven stuff.

If u run the TFS stage 3 the car will ahve no street manners at all, too much duration 248. for a daily driver go TFS stage 2 or Comp cam XE274HR, the XE282HR has 240 duration and is right on the borderline of acceptable on the street but it a great power cam.

why not get the hawks, stainless valves, bronze guides, good springs and the car is not a street car....thats why i bought a truck and trailor, so the stage 3 cam is fine. I would also like to mention that the dnd heads are 800$ cheaper than the afr 205s

this ring a bell?

a ton of people have commented on these heads...the castings they use are a cheap knock-off of the vic jr's, but the way they're cast and machined leave alot to be desired. Perhaps you've heard of "Pro Comp" before...those are the castings they use. The pushrod holes are not machined to use Ford spec vavletrain components-in some instances they needed as much as 0.060" machined away to use stock length ford valves, and normal spec rockers. Don't misunderstand that to mean they were using cheap stock parts, only the dimensions...e.g., 1.6:1 FRPP rockers, or manley 2.02, or 2.05 valves that use stock ford lengths. Instead-it appears that they intended people who bought them to use chevy 1.5 or 1.6 rockers, and chevy length valves...which, unless you buy +0.100" lengths, are shorter than ford valves. Not only that, the castings themselves are not that great, it's almost necessary to pocket port the exhaust bowls due to the massive ridge that exists directly beneath the seat. Did I mention yet, that some of the threads are not even helicoiled?

If you don't mind buying the bare castings, parts, and then spend another $400+ (possibly more) getting them machined to accept normal parts-not chevy parts, getting stud threads coiled, and doing some port work, then sure, they're not a terrible deal...but for the money, I'd MUCH rather swag a pair of Vic Jr's...light years better quality, much better parts, and of course, poured, machined and assembled in the good ol' USA-or get a pair of high ports from Fox Lake for $1200...they're assembled with Ferrea valves, 0.600" lift springs, 10* locks, and for $1200, you've got a great set of heads that have PLENTY of room for improvement.

The TFS 3 is streetable to some, not to others.I think its ok for a DD,we had a cam larger than that in our 408 stroker, and I think it was fine on the street.Of course I also think that our 8" 5500rpm stall PTC converter was fine on the street, when most will say no f'in way,but personaly I liked it better than our 10" converter. It took of just fine in gear idling at 1000rpms.

I will say that you should look over any head that you plan to buy 2v.I havent seen the dnd heads befor, but it seems somethink they arent good.I find the cheap Chinese know-offs arent as bad as people say, just need a little more work.I mean yea,the quality is generaly capper but you get what you pay for.And alot of the "touch-up" jobs you can do yourself.

vic jr's go for about $1250/set for flat tappet or hyd roller springs, the ones with solid roller springs go for about 30-50 more dependant upon where you buy them...

of course I look around alot for best prices-summit and jegs ask $1300 for a set, but ck this out!

you even get a set of gaskets to go with them...even with the shipping, you're looking at $1270-and you don't have to spend the $50 for head gaskets.

Why not the high ports? Is it because of the requirement for a different header design?

normally that statement can and will hold true, but when someone tells they're own experience, I tend to listen a little more intently.

1)needed bowl cleanup both intake and exhaust; not a real big deal, but time consuming...wouldn't you want to just be able to take them out of the packaging and bolt them down?

2)required 0.060" of material removed from pushrod holes (toward the valve side) to use Ford type rockers; this process can be done with a die grinder or dremel, but really should be left up to a qualified machinist, which isn't always cheap

3)16 helicoils installed for rocker studs; the machinist I take my stuff to charges $18/helicoil install 16*18=$288...man, that cost in and of itself lends me to think that it would be more economical to just save up a little more for a better set of heads

I also consulted Fox Lake racing about this one, and their commentary cited several problems they'd encountered with people sending them those heads saying they're the same as vic jr's...port volume inequality, (again) pushrod hold positioning precluded them from taking out the intake port without the possibility of running out of metal, intake bolt holes not lining up correctly...the list goes on.

For my money, I'd splurge a little and get a warm fuzzy about purchasing a set of well developed product instead of an inaccurate copy...just a little piece of mind.

However, it's your money, I can't tell you what to do with it.

And pistons, dont forget thous  (well if your going with the big cam anyhow :D )

just thought about something blue-the high ports use the same valve angle as the vic jr's and the cheap knock off D&D heads...20*, so with that in mind, regardless of which of those he could potentially choose, they would all require the same type piston
