Would you buy a Mustang LX?

If Ford announced tommorow that they were going to make a LX version of the current GT would you get it? The LX would forgo leather, any wheels and tires over 18 inches, spoiler, ground effects and a curb weight of 3300 to 3400 lbs. would you buy it?

One "Hell Yeah" vote here! My GT is about as close as I could get (in November of 2004) to a stripped down "LX." I got leather interior and the Shaker 500, but no side impact air bags, and no subwoofers in the trunk. I would have preferred the car have the spoiler delete option, but I could either be picky at the time or be driving the car. With a stripped down version, one can pick and choose from the aftermarket (personalized and/or cheaper) options or have the plain-Jane look.

Don't see the point of a model like the LX. We kinda have that now (at least in the US) with the Deluxe and Premium versions.

Just get a Mach1 or Boss out there already!

Having had full- or well-optioned Mustangs in the past, I've always liked the idea of having the choice of a stripped-down version, especially if I knew at the time of purchase that I wanted to substantially deviate from the factory offerings. Whether or not I choose to take advantage, I'm fond of the idea of not having to pay for stuff that's going to come off the car. Although I know it would not happen, I'd like to see and "LX" package with cheapy wheels and bare-bones options that make the car weigh less.

I've already got an 06 GT deluxe with cloth interior, 17" Bullitt wheels & spoiler delete. This chassis is just heavy. I don't see how Ford could get it down to 3300 pounds. The only thing extra I see Ford could take out of these cars would be the power windows/mirrors.

Ford did offer the GTS back in 95/96... the few hardcore guys loved it but it didn't sell well. My 87 LX 5.0 has the 4 cyl cloth seats, manual windows, manual locks, manual mirrors... only option is A/C. But I'll admit... the manual windows even aggravates me at the track in that car.

Yeah I think a large part of the market just doesn't want that kind of car anymore. I'm sure it would sell in some small numbers but not like it did back in the 80's.

If I could get the LX with the GT suspesion and engine, I might. Saves a bundle on insurance.

Will not save 1 nickle. That 3V 4.7 300hp V8 is what drives the cost of insurance on a Mustang.

Still don't get why they never made an 05-06 Coupe Model
It would look alot like the 65 coupe body line
(Sedan,Coupe,notch)

Fords missing out on alot of buyers

Ford's not missing anything.
The world has changed since 1965.
Back in 1965, 1966 Ford sold over 600,000 Mustangs / year.

Today the market is much more segmented with many more competitiors (foreign brands). As a result in 2005 Ford sold only 160,000 Mustangs and will probably sell 150,000 in 2006.

A coupe model simply would not add enough incremental sales to pay for the tooling costs and the added costs of manufacturing, marketing and servicing another model.

When they first came out with the new 05's I was looking for the stripped down version of v6. In other words I would have really prefered less electronic options such as electric windows and even no a/c cause I ride with windows down anyway. I only use the ac when the wife is riding along and doesn't want her hair messed up. Basicly cause these Items are more things to need repairs many years down the road.

The premium upgrade only gives you leather and a shaker 500. Other than a prestigous sounding name (witch is why it sells as well as it does) all you're getting is a savings of $180.

Yes, the insurance trick worked back in the 80's. Especially the early 80's, but by the end of the decade when the LX 5.0 had gotten so popular, they had figured out that model was just as fast as te GT and was actually more dangerous when you consider how much lighter the back end of the LX coupe was compared to the hatchback GT.

As for a stripped down V6 looking "LX" model (call it something else though) with the entire GT drivetrain, HELL YES!! Except for the front fascia, and the wheels the V6 looks better than the GT anyway.

Alright! ........ someone has finally taken this dicussion in the right direction.

Here is a serious proposal.

Build the "LX" (for lack of a better name right now) around a basic 2 valve version of the V8 on the Current V6 Deluxe package.

Dont add a thing ...

- - - - nothing - - - -

same suspension
same brakes
same tranny
same interior
same body work

I know why Ford wont do it (their CAFE standards would tank),

but it would sell like hotcakes - for a few months -

The LX is a good idea. A lighter, stripped down model would appeal to people who want to build a track car or just put on their own options and upgrades. Out of all companies, Mitsubishi currently offers a stripped down version of their EVO- No AC, roll up windows etc. but it is lighter and faster than the premium offerings. The LX (or call it base, whatever) could do something similar to shed weight. That's not what I would get, but I think there would be a market.

If you want the most bare bones 05-07 mustang buy a BODY IN WHITE. then you dont even have to have any windows.

I got street cred, yo. I bet getting a title on a Body-In-White (so it can be legally driven on the street) is fun, too.
