Wow...

I have a 95 GT and changed my 4 brakes beginning of last summer with ceramic pads. Don't get me wrong, it brakes alot but damn I used a 2004 Protégé 5 for a few days cuz there was snow here and DAMN those karts brakes on a looney!

Funny thing is that I took the stang today for the last time to go to college and at the first corner, I pulled the e-brake because I tough I had no brakes when pressing mine...

If I ever upgrade to 17'' rims, will the Cobra brakes fit in there ?

yep cobra brakes will fit with 17's

i would also flush out all the old fluid and replace it. maybe you have some water/air in the lines, that would also cause a drop in performance

people overlook brake fluid flushes. it should be done every two years.

oh yeah, the stock brakes do suck. the cobra's aren't that great either, but deff an improvement.

New pads are an improvement, but yeah, you won't believe the difference when you upgrade to Cobra brakes front and rear. Get some stainless steel braided lines and new fluid. I kept the stock GT master cylinder and the pedal feel is perfect.

Yet another mod I wish I would have done years ago. Sure feel safer now!

I've driven my buddy's 89 LX quite a bit. THE WORSE BRAKES I HAVE EVER USED!! I had to stand on them half a block away to stop in time.

I still hit my ABS from time to time so maybe I got good ones. Brakes aren't good just because they're touchy like a small car's. The only time I wish I had better brakes was when I stood on the pedal from 70-0 to avoid stopped traffic. After a couple seconds, I could really feel the fade.

yup fox brake sux big time, and I just bought me a 94 GT and I'd have to say its a great improvement though, but there's a lot of room for improvement..

Another true dat to Grady! I think the SN95 brakes are amazing compared to the 88 GT vert brakes.

There is also a big difference in a new car vs a 10-20 year old stang (the range of brakes mentioned here). I would surmise the Mazda is a bit lighter too.

i have a 95 cobra and i upgraded to powerslot rotors, hawk pads, and braided lines front and rear and it made a big difference, though i think its time to flush my fluid again.

I have a cobra, and I ohhhh so badly want to upgrade to the big brake kit from bear, for now i'm going to replace my fluid and change to SS lines front and rear.. I think all mustangs braking systems suck.. Although they keep getting better.

Were the ceramic pads you bought for street use? I seem to remember there was a racing pad that would actually HURT braking performance if used on the street. Something about the pad not warming up enough to be useful.

I nearly lost all brakes on my 94 V6 (same braking system as the GT) one day. They hardly stopped the car at all, once brake fade set in. I was lucky there wasn't any oncoming traffic, 'cause I sure didn't stop where I wanted to. I ended up upgrading to stainless steel braided (SS) lines, Hawk brake pads, dimpled/drilled rotors, and flushed the brake fluid. Man, it all made a difference! I can brake faster than most other cars on the road now, especially in emergency situations.. It's probably the rotors that make the difference. It feels much better than stock.

The dimpled/drilled rotors actually caused me to lose a tiny bit of braking at slow speeds (due to there being less material to grip to), but I just press a little harder on the pedal. At faster speeds, I gained braking power since the rotors aren't heating up as much, vastly reducing brake fade.

I definitely agree with the group, flush your brake fluid. I'd suggest getting a SS kit (which replaces all 5 rubber brake lines) first, then flush the fluid. The difference will definitely be felt.

Something else which is often overlooked is rotor glazing. Turning or renewing them can make a LOT of difference, right then and there (esp when combined with the other great ideas on this thread).

Chythar, you are right about race spec ceramic brakes. They dont do much when not nice and toasty. These days there are also different compounds to help make a more all around pad.

Great tips guys, anyway the stang is stored i'll recheck all my brake fluid and stuff next spring.. wich seems sooo far away
