Write up for rebuilding a T-5?

My reverse and 3rd gear have been grinding a bit, so I'm thinking its soon time for a rebuild on the T-5.. I'm going to flush the fluid and hope that helps for a bit, but eventually its going to need that rebuild. Wondering how hard it is going to be to rebuild, and if there is a write up on it? I tried using search, but no luck.

Ive broke a few. I can tell you what not to do....

I've blown four, third gear every time.


Reverse is always going to grind, its not sychronized. With the clutch in, put it in a forward gear first to stop the trans and then go to reverse. No grindy then into reverse.

they started to synchrnize them around 1993

That's because it's the furthest point from any support. When you are in 3rd, the gears try to push themselves apart, the mainshaft flexes and the gears spread to the weaker outer part of the tooth and shear.

Fix?

Hardened mainshaft....for $400-500

Fix?...... Replace with Tremec 3550 or better.

Those are the two sites I used.

I had a 3rd gear problem as well. We will soon find out how well an APW gearset stands up to 600+ft lbs with a stock mainshaft and powershifting :yikes:
