You guys are gonna think I'm crazy......

You know Mike, bad as I hate to admit it, Noobz does have a very solid point. When a man catches the car bug it may go into remission, but it never goes away completely. I've sold several because I was "done" only to spend more later when the bug hit again. Your red car is paid for, and once sold another will only cost more money to aquire. You're kidding yourself if you think you'll get out of cars forever. Giving up tobacco was easier for me.

Maybe the answer isn't selling the car, it's just put it on hold or store it. Like I said, my boat's in storage and has been for a year plus. Costs me $100 to put it in the water, but Lately I've been wanting to pull it out and I'm glad I still got it-No way could I afford to buy another.

Well Allen, the expense to build a new one is part of it. My income has dropped steadily for the last 3 years. I've had this car for 2, and I had the 4.6, the special intake, carb, MSD ignition, Tremec trans, shifter and Centerforce clutch sitting in the corner even before that. The proceeds from the sale of the street rod project netted me another 6000. I was that far ahead w/ this car even before I even laid a hand on it. If I had to build another from scratch, I couldn't afford to, (or it would take a bagillion years).
So despite the fact that I may "want" another, reality will dictate that I won't. I won't have all the "aces" in the future hand that I had w/ this one.

It's just like when I thought I wanted a big bike. I bought one w/ the proceeds of the sale of that turbo car. I don't like it enough to even ride the damn thing, and so it sits,...under a cover,....depriciating,.....waiting for me to sell it,......for nothing. ( I owe what it's worth).
It's waiting for some magical day when I decide I want to hang out w/ a bunch of mid-life crisis posers polishing their chrome.
That ain't looking too likely.

So I don't need another "asset" sitting around taking up dead space. If I'm gonna have it, I want to use it.

My Dad always told me if it's paid for and you're not in dire need of the money never sell it. Against his advice I sold when I should have listened. He's still got his Delorean that he bought in 1981. In 1986 he had a heart attack and had to retire that year. We thought the Delorean was gone but he had paid for it in full ($28,595 in 1981). I was 15 at the time. That's when he gave me that advice.

I really have a difficult time understanding why you'd want to sell a car you enjoy. Sell your bike, pay off the loan, and use the extra monthly income to finance the home repairs. You can still enjoy the car, just cut back a little on the car cruises that involve staying somewhere over night, no?

Nate, beat me to this...But, I do know however the typical bike note is usually pretty cheap- $100-$200 a month? Not much but, that is money ahead, especially for something you don't like anymore. Sell that damn bike, wash out of it and dump the debt. Cut your losses.

As for the car, no real reason to sell a paid for asset you still enjoy and can't replace, unless you are in dire straights and it's the only way to pay for necessities. I've done it in the past, feeling it was the responsible sacrifice to make, but I was a lot younger and had more time to make it back..I'm not so young anymore.

Don't get me wrong Mike, I'm not suggesting I know better than you by any means, just throwing out something to consider.

Exactly Allen, plus with your car Mike it really cannot be replaced if you ever have a burning desire to own it again. It's a one of a kind custom that YOU built with your own blood, sweat, and tears. Even if it were to fetch $20K, I'd think such a fine piece of art would be worth at least double that amount to you given the effort it took to create it.

I 'm sorry for being a post whore, but I keep having ideas pop into my head..

Mike, with the talent you have, and suffering income, why not put your talent to work and open a shop, use that red car as a show piece, and make bad ass cars for rich guys with big money? And... use the chit pot of money you make to hire someone to fix the house up? I mean, damn man, people pay big bucks for what you can do... and it's obvious you love to do it..

Please don't get rid of that beautiful piece of expertly crafted machinery. I will regret it if you do. I have been around these old cars for a long time, and have had many, many nice ones over the years, and regret all of them that have gone away because of the feeling that you are having right now. Just put it away. I have not been on this board long, but I have been around this block too many times to count.

Pushed the snowball off the top of the mountain this morning,....... Now it's rolling, and I can't stop it.

I reserved my spot in the auction this morning.
http://lonniecobb.com/classic/

So far I'm one of about 80 registered cars. This certainly is no Mechum.
As a first effort though, It'll give me a chance to see if there is any interest in this car, and see if it'll even get close to my reserve.
If you looked at the attached, it doesn't look like there is anybody there w/ any money judging by the crowd but,.............. like they say about them books and their covers.

I don't want to air all my laundry here, but lets just say that the real reason for selling the car is because of a nasty 5 lettered word:

Taxes.

I guess you could say that I'm selling my car, so I can give the proceeds to the government.
Isn't that the same as giving my car TO the government? Maybe we'll get to see POTUS driving my car?
It is what it is. Had I paid the taxes quarterly as they were supposed to be, I wouldn't have been able to afford the car either, so,...It's an oxymoron of sorts. The smaller inconsequential motorcycle payment, and the list of long neglected "Honeydoos" are just icing on the cake.

On one hand, I'm tentatively hopeful that it will be a big hit.
On the other, I'm like the dumb bi tch on a Friday the 13th movie,....going into a dark room looking for my
missing boyfriend. And we know what happens to her,..don't we?
(only a matter of time before I do something I'm gonna regret,......forever):hide:

On a different tangent, Remember the shop owner who built that 150k Quicksilver Mustang where the guy kept trying to get me to bring my car down there to work on?

Well I stopped by there today.

They offered me a job.

I don't know if I'll take it, they are ambiguos about what it is I'd be doing there. One time he says I'd be assigned to a group of cars w/ a team to get them completed, another time he needs an assistant to help order and expedite. Either way, It doesn't seem like it's gonna be enough money,....But,....he said he would recognize the effort and reward it in short order.

Just another decision to agonize over.:nonono:

Boy have I heard that one before......................get it in writing, unless you know and trust this guy and all.

You and me both. He won't commit to a job description, or assigned duties. The only thing he will agree to is the money,...the not enough money, money. It's a big place, 19,000 sq ft. w/ several areas separated for each of the disciplines related to the business. I'm not all excited about it though, after 40 hours, and after deducting potential future tax with holdings, it wont even pay the house payment.
Probably gonna have to pass.

If I've ever learned one thing about job hunting it's this: Don't ever go into a job for not enough money expecting to make it up later..It never happens. Been there, done that. :nonono:

Mid week countdown begins. There are 84 cars booked in at this Auction as of this writing. Mostly looks like a Chevrolet biased assortment, but there is a smattering of Fords and Chryslers in there.
Wanna start a pool on whether or not it sells for my reserve?

I'm betting it comes back w/ me.

I got a feeling you're bringing that car back home with you. That car tailor's to a specific market of individuals. Mecuum or even Russo & Steele may be better for you. Although Russo & Steele does Auction more modified vehicles than Mecuum does. I'd look into Russo if you want top dollar. I believe they do a road show all over the US. You may have to travel but if you get your money who cares.

Trolling????This is standard banter. A genuine question, intended to solicit genuine answers.
Trolling would involve a made up scenario where I pose as a newb (or otherwise clueless individual) and start a thread revolving around a preposterous situation that I have gotten myself into, and otherwise throw myself to the mercy of the collective.
I find it offensive when otherwise knowledgeable individuals, (such as myself) Pose as dim bulbs just to get a rise out of an otherwise sleepy "Pleasant Valley Sunday" community such as this one. Out of sheer boredom, I personally would never make up a situation like that.

I drove it most of the afternoon (in 90 degree heat w/ my brain freezer rear mount A/C system working fameously) and last night after meeting my hot wife at our bar for a couple of beers. I gotta say, If there ever was a car that fits like a glove this one is it.

I'm conflicted about selling it, but my main worry is that it won't bring what I want. At the same time, I fantasize about the "what if" it takes off and brings what I want and more. ( Then I wake up)

The people at the shows and cruise-ins who are craftsman and build cars for a living know what it took to build this car time wise. It only takes one of those guys at the auction. If I end up bringing it back home, Unless it just does miserable, ( wherein I'll just keep it) I'll chalk it up to step 1 in the learning curve, and start looking for the next auction venue to sell it.
