opinions need from some stang builders

Hey guys I need some advice from those who built/ or are very good at pricing modifications. I am debating for some time between a ls1 rx-7,a 98 turboed 4.6 cobra or a turbo 5.0 sn95.

This is not a question about comparing the cars but rather a general how much would it cost question.

I will have about 16k + a few saved up for something badass in a couple of months, im not looking for a miracle car but something fast that is still upgradable in the future.

All the work will be done myself w/ help of buddy.

target goal is 400+rwhp if I were to get a mustang.

I have a general idea of the cost of a turbo 5.0, like 6k for the car, 4-5k tranny, 5k turbo kit. But im wondering how well the stock block will hold up at that point. Iwant a dd that I can take to the autocross occasionally as well, definitely will not be beating on the car.

Im completely in the dark as to the cost of a turboed 4.6, do these cars need a block upgrade to push over 450rwhp like the 5.0 does?

I would consider turboing my car except, I do not like replacing convertible tops, heavy, and I never use it anyway.

I am wondering if a turbo mustang is feasible for that price range?

or another car I am not considering?

I looked into the turbo awd eclipses, it just seems like the cars take alot of work/$$ to get them running below 12's..
and alot of them are beat on.

Turbo 4.6 Cobra

The stock internals are good for somewhere around 400+ I think, but the block can handle a lot more than that. I've heard close to 800-1000hp for the block.

I don't have any idea what it would cost. I would think it'll be less than or about the same as the 5.0 to reach 400+rwhp. I believe the heads and intake on the 4.6 can easily reach that goal with no work done to them. You'll just need supporting mods and maybe (probably) forged internals.

But...As much as I love stangs, a LS1 RX-7 would kick a$$!

Of the stangs, would the Turbo 5N95 not be the cheapest? I guess a junkyard turbo is out of the question?

Also, $4-5K for a trans caught my attention - I'm afraid to ask what you what kind of trans it is.

Good luck with the decision.

haha, yea I was thinking t56 viper spec.. a little off there on the price

yea turbo cobra would rule..

I guess theres no beating the price tag anymore unless junkyard turbo setup :D
or its a car I already own..

damn cars are expensive

may just wait till i have time to build a x7.. the hard part though is finding a decent roller, they are starting to become scarce.

alright man here is the deal. if you do a turbo'd 5.0 you will not really need the viper spec tranny if you stay with a stock block---a regular t56 will handle anything a stock block will.

the 4.6's will take about the same power ours will without getting into the bottom end. once you do then skies the limit. don't forget about stuff like fuel system--$1500, chassis reinforcement to include better torque boxes--$$$$

with a realistic budget of $16k you can build a decent turbo'd 95---just don't expect a whole lot of extras like badass brakes, hardcore suspension, balls out h/c/i/dart block.

if i had 16k and wanted to build a good all around car i would try and find a 95 M3 for about 10k(may be hard there in FWB) slap a blower, exhaust, euro front brakes, detailed suspension upgrades. it won't be super fast on the street(trap bout 105) but it will be an absolute monster on the track.

btw, you should go over to destin ice and pick up some fresh cobia. blacken it, eat the hell out of it and tell me how good it is---i miss saltwater seafood :(

haha ill have to try it out, never had cobia either. I work in sandestin at a resort (not my career) but damn it sure does pay well while i finish up my schooling :D

Thanks for the info, ill have to think about it some more

get a 96/97

pull the motor, get some forged pistons/rods (cranks and block are good for plenty of power)

swap to the 99+ PI heads

throw in some VT engines or MPH blower cams

slap on a kenne bell kit

long tubes/exhaust

conservatively you should be at 450 RWHP

i would go over to the mod section and poke around and see what other people are running. we can guess all we want but they are doing it. personally i would spend that 16k on a DD, and then turbo your car.

I like the part about seeking those who've done it :nice:

I don't see the BIG advantage of the mod motor however
I mean ... Is it uncommon to see 400+ with our motors

As for the part about getting a dd
Hmmmmm ..... Seems like someone brought that up here before :rlaugh:

Again ... if your committed and money is tight ... just get a beater ;)

A dd at that level of performance

It seems to me like ... Most here thinks it is ... No Big Deal

Lets hear from some ... who've done a Forced DD at that level
and
Lets see if they would ........ Do it again :D

thanks for the input grady, you never hear much about people dd'ing such cars except that fact that it is possible but if it as you say it seems like work/$$ to keep up with the car. I might just hang on to the stang a little longer and decide. After all other then the paint, ive replaced literally everything on my car except the oil pump, and passengers side window motor, and tranny. My car is fairly reliable for a little while.

you guys be happy to know im stickin with stangs, something bout them I guess, and I dont have the patience or time to do the whole rx-7 thing..

but I am switching to the dohc.. (ill miss my 5.0), but I am staying with our round body styles 94-98 because I think they are the ****nit

and all the suspension peices I was gonna throw in the 5.0 , ill keep around until im done car hunting and throw it in the cobra. My first mod is going to be BRAKES (4 piston please) as I hated my gt brakes..
