What's too fast for a V6 Mustang?

This might sound stupid to ask, but i´m going to buy a V6 for my wife and was wondering what top speed (for a longer period) it could stand without damage to the engine, driveline, trannsmission etc. She´s commuting 60 km/day mostly autobahn (no speedlimit). Thanks
 
I wouldn't do over 80MPH, personally. You *COULD* go faster ... but why? Travelling long distances at high RPM and high speed puts LOTS of serious wear on a lot of components - engine, tires, wheel bearings, transmission, rear end, etc. - not to mention speeds over 80MPH are pretty much excessive and unsafe for most standard vehicles. Base-level (V6) Mustangs are generally not designed with the Autobahn in mind; they're made for folks to tool around in at 65 or 70 MPH highway speeds, usually.

If it were an '05 Mustang GT or better, with Z-rated tires and a 6-speed manual, then I'd say regularly cruising at 100MPH would be okay for long distances. But on a lower-end 'Stang ... nah. I wouldn't chance it.

...in which case be weary of pushing the OHV 3.8L found in the '94-'04 Mustangs too hard. They've got issues with head gaskets. The problem was addressed for the most part in the lat-90's, but they're still a weak spot for the engine.

The 4.0L found in the '05-up S197's are pretty near bulletproof. Forged rods, great rod/stroke ratio and OHC in design. They'll pretty much take whatever you can throw at it and would be the better choice for V6 performance.

Thanks again, i´ve posted it again in V6 Tech. I´m going to buy the V6. I have a F150 with the 3v design and don´t want to possibly have to deal with 8 more sticking/breaking Plugs, knocking Cam Phasers and leaking Injectors. I would love to have the GT but i´m honestly scared of what Ford produced there. Are the speed limiter set to the same speed in the V6 and V8?
Is it difficult to change the settings of the limiter?

Yeah, the V6 will likely be limited to about 105mph. They do that based on the tire rateing. It can be removed with a chip, or a hand helf flash unit like an XCalibrator 2 or Diablosport. It will also allow you to add a little timing to it for some additional power. :nice:

Were looking at an 07 V6 Coupe. The convertibles are nice but somehow the styling of the Coupe got me, ever since it was introduced. I´m sure the 4.0 has lots of potencial and i can´t wait:D plus with the gas prices over here one V8 in the family is enough.

Would you call a 1989 Toyota automatic pickup the equivalent of a "lower-end" Mustang, 100 mph-cruising-wise? I made daily long-run drives at or near that speed when the truck was a couple years old (upgraded tires and shocks) and it is still willing to do it today, after 150,000 miles (I'm not).

I think improvements in metallurgy, technology, and lubricants place the V6 Mustang well beyond that standard. With a Pony-package-level suspension/tire upgrade (GT take-off bars and wheel/tires would do) I wouldn't hesitate to embark on a plan to cover prodigious amounts of mileage at 100+ rates. Almost any modern car should be able to cruise at its top speed for long periods, limited only by the driver's skill and trust of suspension and tires, not engine durability.
