nittos drag tires

couldnt hook with the nittos 450 series whatever those are street tires i think. so i was think a slick would be better like mickey thompson and how would my torque boxes hold up. i also have 4:10 gear but not sure if i want to install that yet

My buddy has them and says they're worthless until 3rd gear. He said they're barely better than his street tires.

Funny you mention this here was my "test":

Tire #1: Falken FK452 285/35/18 @ 35 psi.
Tire #2: Nitto NT555 275/40/17 @ 16 psi.

Both done at the same race a year apart, similar weather, similar prep etc... Car had NO power changes. Both races were the FIRST time I had ever driven on the respective tires.

Tire #1 was launched from an idle. Rolled into the throttle. Ever so slight spin into 2nd gear.
Best 60' was a 1.91, and went a couple mid 1.9xs.

Tire #2 was launched more aggressivly. Rolled into the throttle. Spun a fair amount in 2nd gear.
Best 60' was a 1.93, and went one other 1.9x.

You are an excellent driver though. Most of us wouldn't be able to do that. I pulled a 1.888 and a 1.9 on nittos those two times and that was it. The rest were 2.0-2.2 but then again the sun went down so it got cooler.

Ehh with practice I think those numbers are reachable. Now had I say 1.71 60' on radials, then I can see it. :D

I'm disappointed I didn't hit a 1.8 on the Nittos, but I've had zero practice on them. Bolting on some 17" ET Streets tomorrow though :D.

You can hit 1.8, but I've heard it's touchy. People say Nitto's have to be heated just right...not too much, not too little. I tell ya...I don't hook anywhere near as hard as the cars running M/T's and BFG's.

I get what you're saying, but if it's his skill that gets him those numbers on street tires, then wouldn't his skill get even better numbers with a drag radial, if indeed that DR was a better hooking tire?

This is true but here is my reasoning...

I was much more aggressive with the DRs. I heated them up, I launched at 2500-3500 and I was running a lot less air pressure.

It's all about practice, I think everyone will agree there. I don't own the DRs and will never run them again, so I can say for sure if they have 1.8s or better in them.

Hell my very first pass I went 2.26 60' on the DRs... :D

I actaully meant he's a good driver with both sets of tires mentioned. I've never pulled those numbers with street tires. My best was in my Cobra I had 275-40R17 KDWS's almost bald and I ran 2.005...once...:D All others were low to high 2.2's. Car had stock suspension too, minus Mega Bite Jr's.
