went and bought a running explorer motor today. for a damn good price. :D

also got some other stuff...

so far ive got.

~ complete explorer motor. ( GT40P heads )
~ speed pro pistons (flat top) full floating pins with spiral locks. and a new set of forged rods with bolts with bronze bushing for the floating piston pin. all balanced.
~ rings ect for pistons
~ Steeda # 19 cam.
~ X303 cam
~ double roller timming chain.

know i still have alot left to buy. gonna start yanking the explorer motor apart sometime soon. its still in the back of my truck, ill un load it in the morning and get it on the engine stand.

Yes i know, i have two cams. gonna use the steeda cam though.

anyways. i few pics, im tired, sun burnt on top of sun burn and want to go to bed. enjoy.

reminds me of when i first started my GT40P build 3 months ago.

Its taken me that long to get back to a reliable running condition. Partly because of lack of time, and mostly due to lack of funds. Good luck and be sure to have a DD ready because if its your first time youll probably make a few hundred mistakes lol.

Very glad to see you bought a complete running motor. Thats the biggest thing i learned: Pull the whole damn thing out. I did it the hard way and swapped the top end with the engine in the car. We got it all the way down to the shortblock and i thought to myself "you know, itd be about 30 minutes more work and i could have this thing on a stand and not have to crank my back over the fenders..."

Kudos also for having a different cam. The stocker sounds pretty mean and seems to be doing well fro my dd duties, but i still wonder about the difference a hotter cam would have made.

The timing chain is good fun. Be sure you know what youre doing!

Good luck, keep us updated. Im gonna post a thread about my own experiences in a bit. We're doing very similar things!

how many miles were on it? when I got my exploder motor I pulled the whole thing apart only to find that it looked immaculate inside. if it has less than 80k I would just shove the new cam in and button the rest of it back up. I wasted a lot of time and money on what was essentially a perfectly running motor to begin with.

Don't know why people waste money on forged internals when they are not gonna add huge boost or a huge hit on nitrous. That lower end will hold any HCI setup you could throw at it...and it can certainly handle it's own stock parts. Just my $0.02.

had 128 on it. but ran fine.

becasue my plan at end of the year is to add boost to it.

Should be a strong setup. Nice find.

Be sure to check the valve springs on the GT40P heads. Need to make sure they capable of controlling valves with the steeda cam.

its a mild cam...480 lift. looking around right now to see what springs i should use. gotta go to jegs on friday. get bearings and such then i can put the bottom end together.

Sweet, should be a fun build and youll be proud as hell afterwards!!! I put together the last motor on the ground outside my garage sittin on the crate in came in lol, it was a blast and ran pretty good for a while. Keep us updated!

Well right on Ryan! One thing I could never call you is a slacker! :nice: You see the project and tackel it right away, much props man.
And what is S&B refering to? You make some custom cup holders on the LX?

Stock would still hold up. MY buddy made 514RWHP on a stock 302 shortblock, 14PSI and race gas. It had 160,000 miles on the shortblock too.

Stock Mustang rods and pistons (pre-1993) are forged to begin with. The Explorer pistons are hypereutectic, which don't hold up well under a power adder. Not sure if the Explorer rods are forged or what they are. Was your buddies short block originally out of a Mustang? 514 RWHP is on the ragged edge of breaking the block itself. Sounds like fun though, haha.

I always thought the block is more of a problem than the pistons and the hypers vs the forged made almost no difference?

Stop derailing gentlemen. I removed some posts already, so next time I may get a bit aggrivated... :)

Ryan, good luck with the build! You think you might see any benefit from going with 1.7 rockers over 1.6's with the Steeda #19 cam? You'd get .510 lift instead of .480 and with those Speed Pro pistons, valve clearance will definitely be a non-issue.

well if this turn out half as good as your cup holders im sure you'll be happy.

make sure it can handle WOT all day, take it easy buddy

thanks man. hoping so.

not taking the chance

My momma says better safe than sorry... :)

yeah ive been debating on it. gotta figure out what springs, then what rockers i wanna do.

but a guy offered to trade me all the pistons, rods, rings, x cam, timming chain. all for just a console. so i took that deal i couldnt pass it up.

i believe there good to .550 lift.

If it was a cup holder console then you obviously have something going for ya with those. MASS PRODUCE!!

My understanding is forged pistons just can handle detonation better than hypereutectic pistons. If some forged pistons can handle more than 1200 hp, I'm sure hypereutectic pistons aren't too far behind. They just don't handle the heat and shock from detonation. Of course, if the tune is right, you don't have to worry much about that anyway.

Either way, it sounds like Ryan got a killer deal, so its just cheap insurance at this point.
