B303 cam questions

Go to youtube http//www.youtube.com/watch?=4tj_IoaiBvc. It 's got a trickflow stage1 with GT40 heads and offroad h-pipe and flowmasters and the idle is nasty like i said before.
 
I can't quote lift and specs for you, but anytime you do a cam swap like this, it's always ideal to swap out the springs too...as the springs are old and tired, and I'll the stock springs aren't going to be up to the task at high rpm's...

You stand a chance of floating a valve at high rpms.

it can be done on car. It's a pain in the ass, but not too bad. use some nylon rope and stuff it in a cylinder, then bring that cylinder to the top by rotating the crank by hand...this will keep the valves from falling into the engine. Next you'll need a spring compressor, autozone rents them, be sure it's the type that takes the springs off with the head on the engine
 
It will work with your stock springs if they are in good condition and if you use 1.6 rocker arms. Because most guys want to use 1.7s but little do they know that they are putting more stress on the valve train.So if your stock valve springs are in good condition you can use them and as long if you're not shifting at 5k all the time you will be okay.As long as you use 1.6 rockers you are not over loading the valve springs and they should be okay for right now. Trust me i'm a certified mechanic if you're not racing it all the time the springs are okay for right now. but later if you want to step up to better springs you can.

LOL, this cam makes power to just shy of 6k, and he wants to run 20 year old valve springs designed for a stock mustang where power drops just above 5k.

do it once, do it right. If you must use the stock ones, take them off and have an engine shop check them.
 
That's what i was trying to tell him if the springs are okay he can use this cam. Yes he does have to have someone look at them to make sure they are okay. Plus what i was trying to tell him if the springs check out use them but if not get some more but make sure they are right springs for the cam. Plus i know guys that has ran this same cam and i have ran the same cam without problems with stock springs that was in good condition so what i was telling him if he does not run the car at high rpms all the time he will be okay. Plus what i said about the 5k that was an example of tell him not to run he motor at high rpms.I know the power band of this cam 2000-5500 rpm i have the same cam and i know what it can do that's way i recommend it to him over the sorry but sounds good b-cam. Plus the stock springs are rated at 500 lift and if they are in good condition he can run this cam without problems because the stage1 lift is 499/510 and if he uses 1.6 rockers it will not put extra strain on the valve train and as long as he does not use 1.7 rockers it will be fine.
 
The reason i joined this forum was to help people not to brag about what cam i had and what rpm i can turn.I was trying to help this guy out because i have worked on 5.0 mustangs for years and i know what works and what does not work. But it's fine if your car turns 6000 rpm and i will let you in on a something i turn 6000 rpm too. I know the power band says 2000-5500 but that's bull if you have 3.73 gears and a 5speed you can turn that very easy.Plus i have nothing really against the b-cam because it does sound good but unless you have good heads it' not a good ideal to install one.Plus the cam you have has less lift then and stage1 so what are you talking about not that much lift. B-CAM specs 226/226 duration 480/480 lift. STAGE1 specs are 221/225 duration 499/510 the bcam has more duration and that's what get's it to 6000rpm very easy but i can get there very easy too.

I've built several motor with different cams...the current one that I'm running now is the one with a b cam, and I said the b cam makes less lift, we're in complete agreement

as I said, the b cam makes power to 6000 easily, if not a little higher. My other build with the tfs 1 cam made power to just shy of 6k, but the b cam pulls a little longer

I don't like it down below...my current gears 2.80, and it's a dog till 4000 rpm's, then it's like I got hit in the ass by a giant wrecking ball

No, they will not work at all..... if doing things correctly is your goal, that is. Valve spring provision for total lift is just one item to look for when choosing the correct valve springs, and even the lazy lobe of a B-303 requires a better pressure rated spring than the stockers. Besides.... at .480" lift with 1.6 rockers on the B-303, the exhaust springs will not supply the minimum .060" gap required from coil bind (it will be at .030" from coil bind)..... causing them to weaken at a faster rate + valve control problems that will affect the little performance gain the B-303 could provide.

To upgrade them w/out having to remove the heads, you might want to check this write-up on the subject....... but do NOT use the stock springs with an aftermarket camshaft, that is not the certified correct way to do performance upgrades. LUK
