How would you use a $10k budget?

You can rarely ever build cheaper than you can buy. That being said, I would never want to buy a complete project, for me its the enjoyment of doing it yourself. I think I would pic up a nice coupe with some mods already done and use the 2 or 3k left over to do what mods you want.

You obviously didnt read his post douche, he asked about how you'd go about it, building or buying. I'd buy a built car cause i'd get **** out of it for thirty cents on the dollar and it would be done. But ive never built a car so im probably wrong

Running and decent shape is how you describe a vette?

I think your biggest factor is time, not your money. You can by the $800 car and have a hell of a time, or a bitch of a time all due to time constraints. If time is no problem and you have tons of it, you will inevitably get more satisfaction from the $800 car.

If you have a weekend here and there, but no specific and guaranteed time, buy someones 75-80% done fox with a H/C/I on it already, but needs suspension and brakes or something. Those go for 4-7k all the time.

Don't listen to Shoalin Douche, as his answer to everything, even his viagra shortage is a vette. :nonono: Buying instead of building is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the question you posed in the OP.

Luckily for me, I have plenty of time. My daily work affords me spare time each weeknight/weekend to undertake a project of that extent (buying the $800 shell).

I'll tell you what I'd do, because I just started doing it the past few weeks. I'd buy a clean roller, a built shortblock, and a turbo kit... See project thread. :D

This is more what I'm leaning towards. Just piece by piece (big pieces) put this thing together. Hunting for deals all the while.

I say I have mixed feelings about buying a completed car, if just want to go out and cruise without much work or you know all about mustangs go out and buy one done.

If you like working on cars, want to expand your knowledge, then build your own. I have no real knowledge of fords (I own a ton of mopars), but I always liked these fox bodies. I plan on doing all of the work myself except for the little body work and pain that it will require.

I enjoy working on cars. However, I'm faaaar from a professional wrench man. I have a very solid understanding of mechanical things and I would be putting a lot of faith in a Haynes manual or something similar.

I seriously looked at many projects started by someone else, most of the time I did not like the way they took and many of them used engine builders that I did not know or would trust.

This is a concern for me. It's hard to find a car that is "perfect" I know if I took the time, money and effort to do a project like this my end goal would be "perfection". When buying a car outright from someone else I would find myself nit-picking everything.

I really am sounding like I'm talking myself into doing a build. I'll most likely pump my brakes a bit here and continue to search the classifieds on corral, stangnet and svtperformance in hopes that something excellent comes for sale on the cheap.

Thanks for your input guys, I certainly wasn't expecting a discussion to this extent.

Last thing, when doing a build of this extent is it reasonable to expect to be able to complete it for a budget of ~$10k?

Now the question becomes, if doing a build, how would you allocate your $10k?

I'm gonna fall in there with the buy crowd. Depending on what you want, for that kind of money you can get a really fine restored stock car, or as mentioned before a really nasty street car. As much as I like to build my own engine, you can buy one fine car for 10k. I started out buying a $900 roller and had about 8k for my project, but when I started looking at cars for sale on corral it was a no brainer. I paid $5800 for the car in my sig and I've turned down an offer for 8k for it. There's no way I could have put it together as nicely for what I paid for it. The roller still sits in the shop- I gave it to my son.

1. Find car on corral.

2. Buy plane ticket

3. Drive home in car.

:nice:

Edit: spend 6-7K on a nice car and the balance on turbo or blower.

If you have connections for paint or engine work, build one. I have both and built a 347 car with a complete paint job for around 7500. otherwise buy one thats almost done. let someone else pay retail.

Alright take it from me, I built a car from nothing, twice now. And it is never as cheap as you think its going to be, I would say i have about 30k into the 87, sure the 88 was had on deals but i can asure you, no one(not even me) will be able to do it again.

There is so much crap involved with buying a car that is not running, wiring gremlins you wont find until its running again(my blinkers in the 87 STILL dont work and cant figure out why) Lots of rollers have something less then stellar about them and that's why they are rollers. Little **** adds up just as much as the big ****, you just dont realize it. You also go through the mid build blues where you hate the car and just want it gone.

Do i love saying i built my cars from scratch? Sure, why wouldnt I. But i didnt build the 07 or 08 from scratch and love them too.

Buy a badass car that's done, if its a fox, trust me, you'll have plenty of work to do to it. If its something else(like a vette) rock the **** out of it and make it yours.

Coming from the man with 3 stangs I say go with a vette. Whatever it is go with one mostly done.

If your buying as a life project go buy something and make it yours. If you want a car to drive tom. and be able to go places and not feel like its going to get stolen, buy a nice car that is complete and enjoy it. with 10K you can get a nice 93 Cobra thats what I would do
