Between you and the other old fogie at my office, you'd think I'd need velcro shoes and a helmet just to get through the day successfully.


This dude was lecturing me on how to use a stapler the other day and about got b*tch slapped.

Hey,..I'm just trying to be the stern voice of caution of an outsider looking in.

I see things, and I say to myself.

"A tacked weld with a MIG could ( and usually does) spatter or pop off a little ball of molten spatter when first sticking a weld together." When you have an open engine, and you're doing that tack weld thing as many times as is typical on a set of headers,.......how many instances could come up where one of those little blobs shoots off and lands,..........inside a port, or drops through a valley,...or into the crankcase? I don't know what kinda plastic bag you're using to prevent that, but the plastic bags we have here in Alabama are no match for a little 3000 degree molten ball of steel.

And as much of a pain in the ass as it is to try and tack a set of header tubes together inside an engine bay,.....how much more of a pain in the ass will it be to cut it back apart and change it when it hits the strut tower?

MIG? What's a MIG? I only speak in TIG these days...

Well my very pretty March alternator bracket is for a 302. I have a long way to go towards making my solution aesthetically pleasing, so I'll just call this my 50% progress update. I'm pretty pleased with my TIG progress too.

Once I pull it off and hit it with a few coats of primer, sand the teeth marks out of it, and paint it, it should blend in better. But for $7 for the 1/4" flat bar, I'm happy.

If the fit is good you can tig the parts without filler, this results in an adequate looking piece with no grinding.

I will say that my new favorite tool is my porta-band saw. It was a gift, but can be had at HF for $100 if you catch a sale right. The blades are available at Home Depot for $14/pair.

Thanks! Shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure I'll be using a heater tube on this intake, so I'll probably need to get creative
