Regardless...the engine has to stop freakin leaking oil!!
I share your frustration with leaking liquids; I am also tired of looking at wet spots on the garage floor.
I my case it's coolant and PS fluid. Now the car has a new water pump, new WP gaskets, tighten all the clamps (there was one loose from the water pump installation) and a new clamp on the power steering return line. Hopefully we will both find the sneaky, leakey things that still need attention. Being old and fat makes crawling around under the car somewhat more difficult that it used to be...

Mike, as much as I hate to admit it, I believe I figured out my rear main drip. I've resealed it as well, and it didn't even slow down.. but what I did find out.. I was supposed to put sealant on the flywheel bolts, as they can leak oil. NOT looking forward to pulling that trans again.

You'd think all the years I've wrenched on sbf motors I'd know that by now.. ugh!

Hell,..I don't even know if I have a rear main seal leak,...there is so much oil everywhere it could be coming from anywhere, and dripping off the back of the pan. One way or the other though, I'm gonna solve the side plate leak.

I shouldn't have used a cork gasket,...I just shoulda made a RTV goop gasket like I did before...In hindsight, when I removed that plate the last time I thought it was leaking (when it was the valvecover gasket leaking instead) I had to pry that btch off the side of the engine because it was being "held" by that stuff...I just need to be more liberal and way more thorough THE NEXT TIME!

Yeah. I just say no to cork gaskets. RTV will hold the world. I don't even put the paper gasket on diff covers anymore.. just degrease the surface well, and pucky it up with ultra black. Done. They never leak.

Well yesterday I watched the tach on my test road. It was the only gauge I watched. Pulled to 6000 RPM in each gear and it climbed like it was expected to. Whether or not I'm watching delayed info or not I couldn't say, because I had to shift out of 1 in anticipation of hitting the rev limiter. the 2-3 shift was routine and easy to watch (slow assed banger), and the 3-4 was even easier. (And the 1st digit was all that I could watch). I wish I knew how much power this thing was making,....I think it's between 300-350, it just doesn't seem to pull that hard in the higher gears.....
Could I be oblivious because I'm used to what that feels like, and it just doesn't feel as fast as it is?

Maybe it's not fast at all,.....maybe it's a brick.
why not put a go pro facing the tach to watch it that way and replay it...thats what i do with my Air fuel gauge sometimes...i do data log also...

I ... Sh*t, I wanted to make a joke but I swore off the political mess. Carry on.
could it be that you just don't wanna open up one of these?

I've condensed the above novel into just the first sentence or phrase from each ummmm.... paragraph (as much as Mike's punctuation will allow).

Anyway, the abridged version. :D

My wife calls this a blog.

I argue back with her that it isn't a blog, stating instead that it's a "thread on a web forum", and that a blog is like a journal.

So,........that said,..I'll update my blog now.

I called Aviaid last week trying to get the stinkin oil pump leak fixed.

Yesterday, I take the car for an extended test drive (about 50 miles).

Problem is,..I don't know which one of them is telling me the truth.

So,.I drive.

There's exhaust leaking from somewhere.

The Gila hole spits black stuff all over the back of the car.

I know that the exhaust note I'm hearing back there is because of the way that thing is shaped (which I like), but that mess that comes because it is being sucked back onto the car can't be....

When I get back to my driveway,..I stop outside of the garage to look under to see if the pump is wet........

It's dripping...there is oil everywhere.

The standing joke here is that a turbo car spends it's life on jackstands,..but in my case, the turbo, and everything that it impacts has nothing to do with that.

It's all the freaking engine....

It's always been a stinkin oil leak.

This time,..it looks like my cover plate is leaking again.

The first victim of that house move was my stash of scrap steel.

The cruise-in schedule begins next month.

But I built this car to participate in these things.....and to just drive it.

Well,.............That ties up the loose ends of my "Blog" for February......

That didn't leak oil,....That also made "that noise" that brought a smile to your face,.

Where does this one end?

Do you see it in my text?

:leaving:

So,..then...You edited my reply down to a Eveyln Woodhead Sped Riders version for those that want to read it, but won't because it has more than 140 characters in it? For people say............like yourself?

Looks like you just need to insert an ad for ADD medication at the beginning of my posts. (since you have the power to do that)

Well here we go.

It leaks. The two bottom bolts holes have oil seeping out of them that will accrue after about 15 minutes of run time. I'm sending the btch back for a reseal. They say they'll do it under warranty and turn it around in one day.

In the mean time, I'm tearing the sides of the engine off. In this case that'll mean both the intake, and the exhaust. I tightened the bagillion bolts that held that plate on, and they were in fact a little loose. But, no sooner did I run the thing for 15 minutes di a small trickle start to find its way down the side of the engine....I'm fixing that thing bonce and for all....I'll make sure to thoroughly seal the side plate w/ the right stuff on a clean surface and do away with the cork gasket.

When you lay under the car while it's running,..It'll gag you. Even though I was only able to find a small pin hole in the actual exhaust pipe under the car,..it sounds like there's a hole somewhere up front,.......a big hole.

So I'm also gonna remove the exhaust system, and check to see if I can find evidence of a crack or something that I missed when welding the thing,...and while the engine is sitting naked in front of me,...

I'm considering changing the engine color to black. Maybe some satin black engine color....I.I.I...don't know,...I'm just not so warm and fuzzy about the orange engine bottom now that the top half of the engine is black...
So I got that going for me,.....and I have to get it done....quickly.

Then there's the engine oil itself...

This is the same oil that was in the engine after start up...probably a little over 200 miles on it.

It's black,..and it smell like combustion gases..Two of the three drain plugs have magnets on them,..and they were coated in metal funk..but the filter showed nothing...But,..in my engine the oil comes directly to the pump, then goes through a big assed oil cooler, then gets routed through a filter before it goes back into the engine,...Maybe that oil cooler has managed to trap some of what shoulda been in the filter?

I'm really amazed at how dirty the oil was,......It's like it's been in there for 6000 miles instead of 200.

Oh well,.....I'll guess it's the low tension ring set that's to blame for that,....nothing I can do about it.

Lastly,.....I'm gonna do one of two "performance upgrades" while it's apart...It's gonna be one of those "6 of one, 1/2 dozen of another" kinda ding dang deals..

Either I'm:

A. Gonna bump the wastegate springs up to 10 p.s.i. (I know that the car will tolerate this based on the junk assed chinee wastegates dumping in 10-12 p.s.i. when I had those junkers on there).
B. Enable the electronic boost control circuit..and force the 7 pounders to stay closed longer and give myself 10 p.s.i. that way.

Now it makes sense that I already have that circuit in place, and that I should just go ahead and make it work,.....but it's more Voodoo.....Another thing in Tunerstudio that I have no idea how it works, and whether or not its wired correctly, and if it's reliable..

10 pound springs will work, and if they're like the 7 pounders that are in there now,..will be dead reliable.

So,..I'm off to ship the pump off to california..best case scenario is probably 2 weeks before I'm back to running again.

Hell Mike, what're you going to do when it's all fixed?

I bet it's frustrating though my friend. I hope what you're doing will heal the leaks.

I'm committed.

I've decided that I'm doing a color change on the engine, and will tear all of the accessories so that I can go satin black.

I really didn't find anything wrong w/ the exhaust manifold that would cause it to stink so bad. Before I tore it apart, I tweaked the AFR tune up to the high 13's/14.0's and let it auto tune the idle unloaded. I seemed to like it as it sits in one cell at 1100 RPM...so maybe that'll help.

I did find some weirdness though..

Look at medusa. Waaay different coloring on the front 3 cylinders than on the rear three.

When I saw that I expected to see a wet exhaust port. I figured that water is getting into the cylinder, and expected to see the culprit when I removed her.

But,....not the case.
20170301_180232_zpsgg6te8as.webp

all the ports were the same color black....w/ no leaks...So then....why the orange rusty looking finish?

Cause I looked for cracks, and I couldn't find anything that would be the cause of a lean condition like that,...
all while Medusa just looked back at me...

There was an oil leak from the turbo drain though.... Maybe that was what I was smelling?

Another,.........freakin,.....oil leak..
