I have TFS 170 heads and stage 1 cam, I'm looking to upgrade my intake with something better than the current Explorer intake. I have 24lb injectors and matching MAF , looking for what would be a good replacement for a daily driver type car, I'm not racing it. Anyone have any experience with the Professional Products intake, good or bad? Any other thoughts on a replacement intake that is good for a street car?

The PP intake is no better than the explorer intake. I would go with the systemaxx or the Edelbrock rpm.

Yes, with the Professional Products intake manifold I have seen you will not get any better gains than the Explorer intake manifold. Also the Professional Products intake manifold is made in China. I would go with the Trickflow track heat intake manifold or the Edelbrock Performer intake manifold.

I plan on running a Tmoss ported lower with my TFS 170 heads and Stage 1 cam with a 70 or 75mm TB.

I believe the explorer upper has a larger TB opening, and more plenum volume than the Cobra.

I guess the main question is what do you intend to do with the car? Race car where you want top end HP? Or street cruiser?

How much does Tmoss charge to port lower Explorer intakes?
He charges somewhere near $270 for the porting (includes solvent tanking, welding, bead blasting etc), the rest of the expenses depend on how much it costs to ship it to him and return shipping. I'd go this route if it were me. The Explorer intake will perform near the same as the other intakes after a Tmoss port and it looks way nicer than the aftermarket intakes IMO. The fitment and quality of China made intakes can be an issue.

About 300$ all said.

For the mild combo with an existing explorer intake...this is the best option. Most times it will flow around 275-290cfm..way more than the heads are capable of(without significant work) so you will have a combo that can grow with more mods and is cheaper than a new intake.

Where's he located?

I had my victor lower ported by mr moss and had it back in about a week and a half. I'd look for a used edelbrock rpm intake over a pp china intake. Porting the lower is a cheap option as well. If it were me i'd do a holley intake and a more aggressive cam.

Thanks for all the info, this is a car that I use as a daily driver during good weather, and I am not really interested in racing it, just want it to keep looking good and run better than stock. It is a 90 GT and I bought it in 89. Most of the miles it gets is about 20 miles of freeway driving each way to work and a little around town, I just ordered new headliner, carpet, visors and already have a new set of seat covers ( OE style) that I plan on putting in over the 4th of July weekend. The seats are grey tweed but I went with Black for the other stuff. Which intake would be better for low end power, the ported Explorer or some other ? It does have an AOD trans with 3.73 gears and it seems to have lost some low end with the TFS heads and cam as compared to the stock cam and gt40 heads, but it has more high rpm power now, and the cam sounds better.

I went from cobra intake to systemax II. I lost 4lbs tq and gained 10 hp. I didn't notice the loss of tq because it actually made a little more average tq and didn't really notice a gain in power. Biggest difference is that with the cobra intake it would fall on its face just around 5800, but keeps pulling with the systemax II. Porting your explorer lower will fix that for you.

Holly systemax2 would be what I go with. I have one now on my daily which is similar build ported tfs170, 1.6, 24lb, 70mm tb and it moves out real nice. Professional products intakes have been proven to be decent only problem is they tend to have allot of slag in the ports. Just clean them up and it'll be a decent intake for cheap.

With the TFS heads and cam which is best matched with the TFS intake will suffer a little bit in the low range rpms but, mid or high range rpms will greatly improve in the powerband.

I seen dyno sheets that proved the PP intake didn't make any more rwhp or rwtq than the explorer intake what a waste of money. All intakes are designed to make power in different areas of the rpm powerband. That is why you choice cylinder heads and a camshaft that best match the intake manifold you choice.

A lot of intakes are a waste of money for the average person with the average combo which is why the budget friendly tmoss ported explorer is the most recommended intake. It works, it looks better than most intakes, better quality, all for less money. As far as you talking about matching the cylinder heads, cam, and intake according to power band and use of the car I'll have to come back to the explorer again over TFS or others. For a street car you want good low to mid range power. Who cares if an intake makes power from 2500 to 6500. Whens the last time you took a Mustang to 6,500 rpms on the street? My car is a good street car and my occasional romping of the throttle ends near 5,000 rpms because I'm not a huge a-hole looking to cause a wreck.

Good luck with whatever you choose :nice:
