I am considering using STP synthetic oil treatment in my 4.6L 2V engine. My engine is starting to get louder during idle and I am looking to use an additive to quiet it down. Has anyone here used STP synthetic oil treatment here in there 4.6L 2V engine before? I am wondering if it is safe to use in these engines. Any opinions on what additives to use? With STP synthetic oil treatment you add one bottle when you change your oil so minus one quart of motor oil doing your oil change.

Using heavier oil usually will make it quieter.

Be careful not to go too heavy UNLESS you use synthetic though or it could speed wear in some of the tighter areas of your engine.

I run 20w-50 SYNTHETIC oils all the time and yes it will quiet an engine tremendously.

STP is not as good as a Mobil 1, Royal Purple, AMSOIL, Red Line, etc...

I did a oil change today using alittle more than five quarts of 10W30 Valvoline SynPower synthetic motor oil and one bottle of STP synthetic oil treatment with a K&N oil filter. After driving around some I noticed my engine is now somewhat quieter. I don't know why my engine started getting louder at idle and during acceleration it has not been diagnosed yet. My engine started getting louder during the time I was using 10W30 Royal Purple synthetic motor oil for my oil changes. I since started using 10W30 Valvoline SynPower synthetic motor oil again for oil changes and noticed that my engine has ran better overall quieter at idle and smoother and quieter during acceleration. I ran this motor oil for years because of the excellent oil analysis reports I viewed on this motor oil. I believe in doing oil changes on time every time because it is a lot better than having to install a new engine.

I usually love Synthetics and I swear by them honestly.

I have personally owned 3 cars with over 500,000 miles on the and a 5th got to 460,000 miles and I got rid of it.

The cars were raggedy by that time of course but had original engine and transmission.

Synthetic oils are not "lighter in reality" but I always treat them as if they are.

In a car with 150,000 miles or more if I want to get to the 500,000 mile mark I use no less than 10w-40 but most likely 20w-50.

Wear is going to happen by 150,000 miles or so no matter what you do and you can follow the number on the cap anymore.

I also live in a fairly warm part of the country too though. Would not do 20w-50 at the top of Minnesota during the winter or anything...

I get oil analysis done once a year too and change the oil when TBN is about 75% depleted.

TBN is "Your trash can size" if you are not familiar with oil by the way.

Good luck my friend, sounds like you are well on your way.

Here is a pic of the 10W30 Valvoline SynPower synthetic motor oil that I will continue to be using on all my oil changes. The highest mileage vehicle I ever had was a 2003 Toyota Camry XLE 2.4 L four cylinder with 410,000 miles that was used as a Taxi before and cosmeticly it did not look great but it still ran to the day it was sold. All I did was all the general maintenance and all the oil changes on time and it lasted. I had lot better luck with imports than domestic cars myself in my experience.

That s good oil.

I have used it.

I probably have about 20 5 quart oil jugs of that.

I own my own diesel repair business but also do auto stuff and I try my best too push people toward Synthetic.

Right now I use mostly Redline 5w-50 in everything I have got.

$12.95 a quart buy going by the results of oil analysis I can go 10,000 to 12,000 before the TBN is down 75% and none oif my cars leak oil.

If the started I would start using a cheaper oil.

Most of the cars I have ever owned started out with 300,000 or more miles when I bought them.

Most people give up on them and I buy them for nothing.

I bought my son a car 2 years ago with 273,000 miles on it for $1200.

Put a Mass Air flow sensor crankshaft position sensor and fixed a air intake manifold gasket.

Grand total of $100 in parts and 40,000 miles later it's running like a top after it had been sitting in the guys front yard and he thought the car was dead.

All the cars I got over 500,000 miles were Hondas.

Trying it with Subarus and Nissans now.

We shall see.

The biggest weak points of cars now are CVTs.

I have heard they don't last that long.

I take that as a challenge though, we shall see!!

That good oil though, it will do you some se rious justice in the long haul!!!

From what I have read Redline Synthetic motor oil is one of the best synthetic motor oils you can use for best results in the long run. I am partial to Valvoline and Amsoil though. The highest mileage Subaru I ever seen was 1995 Subaru Impreza with 381,000 miles on it and it still ran good. So far I have seen Toyota,Subaru, and Nissan as some of the most reliable and dependable vehicles out there. My 1996 Ford Mustang GT is a fun and good looking car but has had a lot of repairs and down time unfortunately. I still love Ford Mustangs!

A Subaru Impreza is what I have now. 2015.

2007 Nissan Altima 3.5 and 2017 Nissan NV3500.

Oh trust me I absolutely LOVE Amsoil!!

Just signed up to be a dealer.

I use the signature series 20w-50 and the high Zinc 20w-50 in a lot of older cars.

High zinc kills your catalytic converter in the long run if you have an oil burner, but I would rather have to replace the catalytic converter than the engine.

Most of my cars don't become oil burners till the "end of life" anyway.

I just recently started using Redline.

The don't get SAE/API certifications on a lot of their products but I absolutely love them.

They tend to run a lot thicker that the equivalent grade of oils you may be use to.

The oils I use from them usually have a HTHS number of 5.0 or better which is INSANE.

Some are as high at 6.0 HTHS (the 10w-60 and 20w-60).

You are doing great with the A msoil! Very high TBN(trash can size)

Some AMSOIL can run 35,000 miles between oil changes!!

I used Amsoil 5W30 and 10W30 Signature Series synthetic motor oil for 3-4K miles because of the extreme humid heat and cold that we get here in Atlanta Georgia which ruins the properties in your motor oil or I could have ran it longer. Amsoil is still one of the best synthetic motor oil you can use. I heard that before that high levels of zinc can ruin your catalytic converters. Your Subaru and Nissan's will last if you do all the maintenance on them. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the Ford Mustang.
