'87 Coupe Going Under The Knife... Looking For A Good Forum

I think you missed the point of that story.

Not really, you are not the only one out there with a mortgage, wife, kids and a limited budget. Some of us choose to do things differently, it is what makes America what it is. I have no problem with you doing your thing, I will do mine. I was making my point based on one very small part of your "story". Not the whole thing. As far as the Airplane goes, well that is easy, it gets an Airplane engine  The Formula Ford (if that is what it is) get the Ford engine that the rules require, nothing else would be allowed.

What's an airplane engine? There's so many different manufacturers of "airplane" engines out there. You can put a Continental IO-360 or a Lycoming IO-360 in a Cessna 172. So if you could generalize that by saying "an airplane engine" wouldn't it be the same as saying I'm putting an automobile engine in my car? Why does it matter if it's Ford, Chevy, or Mopar?

That airplane is an experimental Lancair IV-P homebuilt aircraft (me and my dad built it in our two car garage yeeeeears ago). Engine is a Dart tall deck block, Dart headed, billet crank, full roller, turbocharged, redundant ECU, redundant fuel injection system V8 based off of a Chevy 400. (The pictures are our "Demonstration" engine that we'd take to airshows, engine ran but there was no driveshaft to the reduction box so we didn't kill people when we'd start it in the tent).

As for the car... that's a little small for a formula Ford. That's a formula SAE car that my brother built when he was going to UF way back in... .um... I think it was around '96. It was custom built from the ground up. Engine is from a Honda CBR600. That thing was insanely fast.

Well, since I don't know anything about airplane engines it gets the generic term "airplane engine". But I know a hell of a lot about automobile engines, so in that case it does matter what is stamped on the valve cover. At least to me. What is relative to me may not be relative to the next person. And so it goes.

I don't know about a higher level of ingenuity, but I will agree with a higher level of technical knowledge. In your standard OHV V8 you stab one cam, degree it, you're done. I've built enough mod motors to know what goes into them. I think I said it before, but I'll say it again, I don't discriminate when it comes to the "manufacturer" of an engine. By the time I'm done building an engine, the only manufacturer likeness it has is the basic design. I don't even want to tell you how easy it is to put one cam in, perfectly degreed, 180 out on a mod motor. You won't know until you fire it up. It won't hurt anything, but it'll run and sound like garbage.

As far as big inch Mod motors go, as much as I'd love to see it, I don't think it'll ever happen. I mean, they've been out for over 27 years and there is only ONE aftermarket head for them. ZERO aftermarket blocks (unless you want to count some of the billet blocks I've seen for the Coyote, but I don't count them because they're not suitable for a street car). If it hasn't happened after 27 years, it's probably not going to happen, and if it does, the price will be ridiculous. There's not much point to a big inch modular anyway, not as long as TF is your ONLY choice of aftermarket head. Everyone knows that the only way to make big power on a mod motor is lots of boost, and they do that very well. Why would Dart, Brodix, or any other manufacturer go out of their way to build an aftermarket big bore block capable of big inches when the top end is not available to support it? Big inches are primarily for naturally aspirated engines, and no PI 2V, 4V C head, or 2V TF head is going to support a 400+ cid modular engine naturally aspirated.

No worries man, you're not polluting my thread. :flag:

This^^^ This is EXACTLY why I end up building more Chevy than anything else. It's not because I favor them over another, it's because the aftermarket is just so much more abundant. If someone comes to me and wants me to build them a Ford FE or 385 series I'll gladly do it. I'll sit down with them, go over their goals, and present their options and what it'll cost. I'd do the same with a SBF, SB Mopar, BBF, BB Mopar, Honda, whatever... it makes no difference to me.

In my case I came across a running 454 from a motor home with less than 70k miles on it, a TH400 trans in great condition, a set of very nice -781 BBC heads, a J&W SFI rated bellhousing for the trans, a Scat 4.00 cast crank, and an Eagle 4.250 crank... and I'm into all of that for less than $700 probably. Financially it makes sense for me to go with what I've got. I'm the sole breadwinner in my house. I support my wife, two stepsons, and my (almost) 2 year old baby boy. I'm ballin on a budget. If I could get my car to run 9's with a Mazda 13B for $19 then I'd have a little rotary in there.

He wasn't talkin about a mod motor, he was referring to "any other engine" that wasn't a Chevrolet. A mod motor being the exception, a sbf/bbf can be built by the same slobbering troll that can follow a list of suggested mods to build a Chevrolet engine, and net a "close to advertised" hp number when it's done.

Didn't they put airplane motors in the old Saab's ? That's why the transmission was on the front of the engine....and the windshield was round....and the cockpit seemed to wrap around you. I miss my old Saab 900 turbo.

Now get back to car talk....

You cut the trunk out and now what ?

Do you guys have any idea how many 67-68 notch 6 banger mustangs have long since went to the graveyard because they are considered undesirable? How fckd up does a mustang have to be in your eyes Noobz before its better to have it rescued/transplanted/and used instead of just getting smashed or shredded into scrap w/ the 250 banger still under the hood? Granted ,..the cars no fastback, and I'd feel differently (as would the entire collectible car community) if the subject car above was a FB,...but it aint.

It's a Fairmont/MustangII/Pinto/ or any of an entire list of other dog ugly ford dork-mobiles that go to their grave w/ their fordness intact every day.

You'd be a lot more comfortable everyday if your panties weren't always so wadded up.

I personally could care less about what engine is under the hood of a Fox Mustang. Having been around this scene for the past 20 years, there's not much new stuff out there these days. Reason I stopped going to mustang shows. If you've seen one Fox on Cobra R's with a GT40 intake, you've seen em all.

I'd welcome some unique swaps. I'd have nothing to contribute, but it certainly would be interesting. I've seen guys doing 2.0 ecoboost swaps, 3.5LTT ecoboost swaps, Coyote swaps, etc into the Fox platform. The coyote gets all the press, but some of the other swaps are very interesting and I'd love to find a build thread on those cars.

There's not much "new" tech out there these days for Fox mustangs. I'd love to see someone do a Ford 2.7TT swap into a Fox. 325HP/375TQ in stock trim....even I'm tempted if those engines start to drop in price like the coyotes are.

If I were building a car that I was planning on driving every day then I agree with this 100%. I think the ecoboost would be a bada$$ swap. I've seen a lot of Coyote swaps into a Fox, and they're cool, but the wow factor has worn off for me. The Coyote is a killer engine. I don't think anyone can dispute that. I had one in my '12 GT, and the first time I drove it I was probably drooling in disbelief. Despite it being a killer engine, it's also physically HUGE. It seems to me that if you are trying to go really fast in a straight line there's cheaper ways to do it than a Coyote, and if you're looking to build a bada$$ daily driver, a 3.5 ecoboost with the wick turned up a bit would be an awesome ride.

I think the 2.7L would be even more fun in a light car like a fox. Not to knock the 3.5L but the 2.7L is getting praise in the F150 world and I've heard a few times they guys have preferred it over the 3.5L as being a bit peppier and quick to rev.

Of course, the 2nd gen 3.5L in the 2018 cars making 400+HP is nothing to overlook either. I even like the exhaust note of the new GT

Just a matter of time before these cars wreck and end up in the boneyards. They aren't exclusive engines like a 5.2 voodoo. Even the 2015+ Ford Transit gets the 3.5L TT.

Someone want to donate me a new 3.5L TT? I'll sell off all my Windsor parts in a heartbeat.

Of course, these engine swaps aren't drop in, it would be a true project

I missed the part where transplant was necessary?

If it's destined for the track, I have no bones. That car is as good as dead already. Cheap and Fast is the prescription. Whatever parts are at your disposal can be tossed in with enough power to put it into the wall. No loss. Just don't try to tell me that the reason it was done was, "Er wanna beh differnt then all them other redneks". Same :poo:, different blender.

If however you bought the Mustang because well... Mustang; That's another story. In this story, we appreciate it because it's a Mustang. I like old luxury cars too (some) and I prefer that those come with their associated accouterments as well. Drop an (insert abomination here) into it and ceases (for me at least) to be Mustang. Here's the weird part: Dropping anything other than a Windsor in there doesn't really float my boat either although I can certainly appreciate a Coyote swap to some extent.

To re-iterate, I can certainly appreciate a project like tanner's. It's effort and attention to detail and hopefully, a stable and well running street monster when it's done. Is he building a Mustang? No more than your Gila Monster is Fairmont... Futura.... Fox... Ford.

Oh... and it needs machine guns. :D

It's probably more a soul kind of thing for me. I don't really like the thought of my dead body being used by a needful recipient either. :ack:

Meh to each their own. I have disagree with the dead body part tho. I mean if you needed a heart transplant and it came from a Chevy owner....better than not being alive. Oh what about the brain...megasquirt it

I mean an LS motor is just a glorified Windsor with EDIS anyways, heck if we had stock heads that flowed like stock LS heads. Then mod motors wouldn't of needed to be put in our cars in the first place.
