Got the tank today. Man was the box beat up. All of the corners had punctured through the box, and one corner of the tank was bent, but not enough to be a concern. They sure dont package them worth a F. Just a tank in a box, no foam or paper around them.

Anyway, I got her cleaned off with some brake clean and shop towels, and went to painting. Paint went on smooth and easy. I installed my new filler grommet, as well as my fuel level sender, which to my surprise didnt come with a new rubber O ring. What kind of is that? I used the sole O ring that came with the tank (not sure why it only came with one, being it has two holes needing them...), and luckily my new fuel pump came with another. Cheap asses these days, I tell ya. Now Im just waiting on the fuel pump pickup, and I'll be all set.

Check out the underside. Once I sprayed paint on it, I noticed it has some mondo warpage... Seems very solid though, and thats what the tank cover is for.

Im debating those damn pads versus my foam tape. I might just find some generic ones for cheaper though, and cut them to fit.

Tomorrow my aluminum driveshaft gets here, as well as the POR15 I ordered. Tried getting UPS to hold the DS at their DC for me to pick up after work (avoid giving my wife another "moment"), but they said LRS doesnt allow that. Weird. If you guys dont hear from me tomorrow night, its because I am hanging on the wall somewhere by my balls.

I wish I looked for something cheaper too. I wanted to just get the tank installed asap so I just bought them. I didn't anticipate my delay

They are about 1/4" thick btw.

That looks about the same color I did mine in

Edit: Now that yellow purge valve is going to drive me nuts.

PS the hanger comes with another gasket and misc fuel line clips as well

I used the same gray I used on my block, valve covers, tank straps, etc. If you cant tell, thats my accent color being used around the car, lol.

Today was an odd day.

This is my youngest son, wife and daughter going for a walk after greeting me with a smile in the driveway. The wife even said, "You have two boxes on the porch." Oldest son was at a friend's house.

The boxes...

Within about 15 mins of being home, the DS was installed, and box disposed of, lol.

And then I started the POR15 painting (the small box). Things I learned about POR15...

1) It is as runny as water, no joke. Runs for days, drips to dodge as you lay under the car painting.

2) Whatever gets on your skin, get it off immediately. My painting hand is sticky AF after srubbing and scrubbing, because the paint was running down the brush onto it since the brush was upside down during painting.

3) Their silver is metallic looking. Should have gone with black, but assumed "silver" would end up more gray. Nope. Gonna top coat it with my dark gray paint after the second coat sets up.

4) It absolutely doesnt stick to a smooth surface , but they advertise that. I roughed up most of the surfaces with steel wool that I had laying around because I am out of sand paper, but I wasnt that thorough. I have an area that it just runs right off of, that I will have to go back and rough up and recoat.

That's very strange given my expirrience with it. I did most of my underside in black, and it had normal consistency and went on with one coat. I didn't have any of the issues you seem to have had.

Edit: this is when I did mine. One single coat of black gave me this coverage. (In progress pic)

I know the silver is advertised to "fill" more, and look smooth over the top of rust. They must have different chemicals and additives in them. That first coat tickened up well in an hour's time, and allowed the second coat to go on more easily. Im sure part of the problem with the first coat was my lack of prep. I only did a quick scuff, didnt take my grinder with wire wheel to all of it. Im happy with how the second coat looks. Like I said above, I'll spray over it with my gray paint, and it'll look nice in the end. Not that anyone will ever see it though.

I'll bet you didn't stir the paint, and only shook it right?

If you didn't stir that paint, all of the really sticky fungoo that makes up the solids in that paint is laying in the bottom of the can...and you were just painting the solvents that sit on top.

No, I stirred it up. My dad was a painter years ago, I understand the need to be sure its mixed well. It seemed like it was setting up as it dried.

I've been putting the black POR15 on my floor pan (inside) and don't have those issues. The only prep I did on it was run a vacuum over it real quick, not even a scuff or wipe with a wet rag.

I'd almost send the POR guys an email with that pic and see what's going on there.

I need to see if I have any black left and do my fuel tank area now. I can't slap the tank back in without it now that I see you are doing it.

Oh BTW, I think you have Sn95 disks with the rear ford racing e-brake cables?

Pay attention to the clearance of the center adjustable cable to the AL driveshaft. Since the D/S is bigger, it tends to rub the end of the threaded shaft and clang off it over bumps. After getting my e-brake adjusted right, I marked where the nuts went, and then trimmed the rod about 1" past so it wouldn't hit the driveshaft anymore.

Just a heads up while the car is sitting on jackstands and easy to do.

As of now I am still running drums and the stock E brake set up. I went through and rebuilt them, but didnt want to dick with the conversion yet, knowing I had the engine project to tackle. I will still check out the E brake and be sure there is clearance. Thanks for the heads up.

What if... they forgot to add the fungoo to my can???

When I get home and snag my H pipe off the front porch before my wife gets home, I'll check out under the car and see how it looks/feels. The Silver formula may just be that different from the black. They are advertised as having slightly different uses. My car was not overly rusty or anything, I just wanted to do it while the area was accessible.

I tell you what, our threads have worked wonders for motivating eachother. Kinda funny how we are doing such similar things at the same time. Did you paint that purge valve yet?

Not yet. I saw your nice new evap hose you installed on it and realized "I need one too" so i'll pick one up and then go paint it.

Yup, I have myself convinced that I want anything old and crusty to be new or at least cleaned and checked over before I put it back.

Speaking of that, I am a little confused back up in the front of the car. When I bought the car, the low coolant light came on right away. When I woukd add coolant to the empty overflow tank, it would immediately drip out onto the floor. I figure its either cracked, or the hose is bad somewhere down low. After pulling it out, cleaning it, and filling it up in the kitchen sink to check where it leaks, it holds water overnight without so much as having any evaporate out.... So weird, because I never added coolant to the radiator, it was def dripping out of the overflow. Never even filled it high enough to flow into the radiator.... Im stumped.
