351 Windsor swapped 92... What manual trans can i use???

I'm trying to swap a 351 Windsor that is built and bored out to 408 and also throwing a 78mm turbo on her. I'm having trouble finding a manual transmission that could be put into the Stang and hold up to that much power, throw me some ideas y'all!!!!!!!!!!!

T56. Tranzilla .

I love manual transmission but with that kinda power on tap, I’d be going auto trans. Theres enough responsibility steering and braking with huge power like that.

can be done . You just have let it hang to do it . I did 640 at the tire on pump gas through a tko . Car wouldn’t hook for :poo: anywhere . 2-3 rolling just leaving tire marks all the way up into 4th . Fun but gets old too . That’s why I went with the built aod . I also broke the tko and had it upgraded . I bought that new as well

What’s it cost to build a bullet proof AOD?
Start around 23 or 28 and move up into the mid 4k area . These units have been 8s for years though .

Mine has the 1200hp valve body option , sfi bell housing , upgraded over drive controller . Trans brake. Freddy brown in Long Island ny is the guy to talk too

The power of the engine is as relevant as the tire. What tires are you going to run this on?? You can run that engine with a stock T5 all day long with crappy tires. It's a tug of war, the engine is at one end, the tire at the other, and the transmission is the rope in the middle. If you are talking about running a turbocharged engine with an optimum bias ply tire, you are looking at a Tremec TKO-600, a Tremec Magnum T56, or a Lenco ST1200. You could possibly get away with running an AR5, but I wouldn't go that route.

Ive pushed over 1400rwhp through a t56. As stated its a waste much better off going auto once your in the 700+ range.

I've been in this game for over 25 years. I had a lot of friends that bought into the "auto fixes all" story. I'm not saying the best built auto transmission won't be faster and more reliable. But not all results are typical. I had a knew a lot of hardcore manual guys that finally gave in to buying an auto only to end up spending $1000+ every 3 passes to have the transmission torn apart and fixed. I'm just saying that it could go either way.

If you really want a good manual transmission, don't take my advice, at least take the time to call Bob Hanlon at Hanlon Motorsports. Bob and Linda Hanlon will not steer you in the wrong direction.

Are you drag racing? Road racing? Street car?

If drag racing is your thing, Lenco, G-force, Jerico, Liberty are your better options. You will want to load the engine somehow at the line to leave with boost, 2 step, whatever. Then down track you're going to have to stay in the throttle which means clutchless shifting. The Lenco is probably one of the better choices but they are heavy and a little power hungry. You won't hurt it though.

Jerico and Liberty will work as well on road racing. Neither is very street friendly, however. Kinda clanky, little hard to downshift, etc. But with turbocharging, it's probably not very road-racing friendly anyway.

Street car? You'll want something synchronized BUT the downside is you'll have to learn to shift really really well if you plan on drag racing it, to keep the engine loaded between gears-so that the turbo stays spooled. I can't shift that well with a synchronized transmission and I've been a manual-trans racer since the beginning of time. Clutchless? Different ballgame--but has it's downsides. Never used a manual with a turbo aside from my '93 coupe which is a 4 cylinder turbo like the old SVO's were. Fun but not all that powerful. Even still, first and second are worthless. Third is too in cool air and/or wet pavement. Just a standard T5. Running 18 psi, basically a stock engine with a couple very mild and common mods (exhaust, intercooler, and intake). Maybe 270hp?? Never dyno'd it.

I'd also vote for a call to Bob Hanlon.

You can clutch shift a manual with the thottle to the floor. The engine just hits the ignition rev limiter which dumps more heat into the exhaust, which means the turbo stays extra spooled.
