Need help identifying an engine part

Or there are other places that say the same.
“The EGR valve is normally closed. There is no EGR flow when the engine is cold, at idle, or during hard acceleration. The EGR flow is at its peak during steady cruising under moderate load.”

Now if you want to take it off for some weight and tune without it for a max race effort, that’s understandable. I think everything missing that was throwing codes and irritating the stock computer on my car when I saved it from the track, both smog and EGR, weighs about 8 lbs, not including the cats.

Here’s the actual EGR strategy from the A9x as written by Ford. We will ignore the “confidential and proprietary” statement and don’t ask questions ;)

This section is 30 or so pages long so I just snapped the most relevant. As you can see, throttle condition is one of the criteria.

APT of part throttle is 0. Idle would be -1 and 1 is WOT. (This is explained on a different page) The only allowable condition to allow the EGR to function is part throttle, otherwise the system self-disables until the 0 condition is met.

More importantly, LOAD is a bigger part of the equation as to when the EGR is functioning. Even at part throttle, as the engine loads up (like going up a hill) the egr is commanded to disable. It would take 5 pages to show this.

In other words, when you need power it shuts off.

Also, just to add. If the EGR is disabled on the A9x, it also disabled “decel fuel shutoff” and “manual trans shift fuel shutoff” from the programming as well.

This doc is almost 600 pages of ECU function.

A lot of misconceptions of how "most" emissions system works. A properly operating EGR system does not hurt HP at any time, except for this caveat: If the EGR system makes the cylinder heads or Intake manifold less efficient, then yes, it can hurt HP. But usually never at PT.
 
I’m still curious what this part is. I’ve spent a good hour down the Google rathole. My 1986 EVTM is quiet on the 3.8L with regards to this.

I’ll have to check my chiltons. I always felt it was better with the early cars.

Lol....i did the same. Not much info on the 3.8L.
 
It’s labeled as an “exhaust heat control valve”

However I can’t find any additional reference to it.

This is out of my Haynes manual for the 1986 3.8
