Progress Thread Komo's 1990 GT - Parts Gathering Purgatory & Home Remodel

I usually use a big socket and [tap] them in with a hammer.

Some anaerobic sealant usually helps (i.e. Blue/Red Loctite) around the outside of the seal. They also make purpose specific sealant for this too (I've never used it).

Nope, well sort of, you don't need the puller.
You got any big sockets? They do make seal installers but they are for wimps or real mechanics that do it for a living, I have a big socket that fits but can't remember what size it is, I've taken a light hammer (orr brass hammer) and tapped them in, just jiz it up with some RTV and tap tap tap around the perimeter of the seal until it's seated,

I bought some of this, would it work?

Just put it on the outer and inner part of the seal?

Then wipe off any excess on the crank, grease up the outer side of the crank to install the new balancer? Do I put gasket sealer on the key way before installing the new balancer?

Looking at the photo of the crank in post #157 I also think I have a slight leak somewhere above this area as everything above the balancer is all grimey. Maybe my valve covers are leaking. A job for another day/week/month/year!

Outer part [only] where it meets the block. Put nothing but oil on the inside of the seal.

Alright so remember I get to work on this like in small timeframe increments. Once I remove the old seal I can leave it like that for a while until I have more time to install the new seal?

Start to finish, removal to installation should take like 15-20 minutes. I'd advise to do that in one go as it's opening the internals to the outside environment.

Oooook had some time today since my kid took a long nap. Got the old crank seal out, major pain but the seal removal tool did help a lot:

Got the new one in, also a major pain. I tried and tried tapping it in with a large oil filter socket, rubber mallet, etc… just wouldn’t go so I Ended up fabricating a PVC pipe concoction and used my pulley installer tool to push it in:

And then got the balancer on. I used some spare 5w-30 oil and lined up the outer crank and inner balancer surfaces.

Got the balancer on:

I have not put the crank bolt in yet. Before I do… anything look off to anyone? I’ve read to torque the crank bolt down to like 90ft/lbs, is that correct? Do I put blue loctite on the crank bolt? RTV on the keyway?

All of that is fine.

What I do:

Loctite on the crank bolt
Thread it on until it bottoms out / Use a wrench to ensure that it bottomed out
Apply the battery operated FU wrench and DUGGA DUGGA until the beat is consistent.

One other thing. My balancer came with a new one of those timing light contraptions… can I leave the original one on or do I have to replace it as well?

The question there is whether or not the pointers point to the exact same location. If not, you have to use the one that came with the balancer you have installed.

Same RTV I used on the crank seal in the key way as well? Or did I miss that step by putting the balancer on first?
