Progress Thread LILCBRA's 87 GT vert project (now prepping to replace the left floor pan)

Thanks guys! I was wondering if there was anything there to begin with. But I remember my 84 had this weird looking piece of trim that went there so I was thinking that I was missing something. Good to know that I'm not. Like I said, the more I looked at the pic above, the more I was thinking it was probably just painted black to begin with and they probably never touched it up whenever the previous owners had this crap paint job done.

Pulled up a pic of my 84 and cropped that area to show the trim I'm talking about on that car. I'm relieved that they did away with it later....

So I went somewhere today....

Unfortunately I didn't pick that up. Nor did I get anything for my 55.

BUT - I didn't come home empty handed!

I will drive the vert this summer!

Actually did some work on the vert today. First thing I did was pull the front bumper cover off to make it a little easier to replace the headlights. That's not the only reason, but it does make is a little easier. Had 3 studs spin and strip the fiberglass header, so I'll have to deal with that now. Then I found some hidden damage, which kind of explained why the original bumper cover was trashed. The first thing I noticed was that the right side fog light mount was welded to the support bar. It was welded, apparently, because someone broke off one of the mounting bolts. Then, I found that the bottom bolt holes on the bumper support were broken, so I'll probably have to find a new one. Then I found the left front fender was damaged behind the bumper cover, but not enough to show on the outside. Finally, the radiator support has a dent in it as well. Apparently this car had a rough life before I bought it.

I then moved to the interior - I pulled the door panel from the passenger door and cleaned it up. It's faded a little, but it was also screwed to the door around the perimeter. One screw was on the back about midway up the door in the vinyl, then there were a few screws along the bottom in the carpet. The arm rest has also shrunk and faded, so I'll probably need to order new. While I was on that side of the car, I noticed the paint was peeling from the forward rear wheel spat. So I scratched some of it away and found that it looks like it's cabernet like the rest of the car. But the car was originally 2 tone. So this piece isn't original to this car? Also, the skirt looks like it was somewhat bunched up or shrunk or whatever and left a gap between it and the rear spat. I'm not quite sure what to think of all of that.....

I also did a little work in the trunk. I had to reassemble the fuel door latch as I pulled it apart through the tail light hole to put some gas in it. The release button stopped working for some reason - I tried it again tonight along with the trunk release, neither work now. I put the original tail lights back in, then paid attention to the trunk lid. We know the car had a bad repaint, but the trunk was still the original cabernet. The deck lid, on the other hand, was completely red, but the red didn't match the rest of the car. It was also not gapped correctly and makes contact on the right side. It still had the sticker on the under side, so I snapped a pic to compare - it's from another car.

I'm not quite sure what to make of all of this, but I think what may have happened was that this car was bought to use as a parts car or donor for someone, then was thrown back together with whatever they could get a hold of, received a Maaco spray, then sold again. If I had to guess, I'm the second buyer since then as I pulled a bunch of heavy gauge wire from the battery and trunk - someone had a thumpin' system in this car at some point.

Spent more money on the vert last night. Ordered a new front bumper support, new deck lid to replace the luggage rack, and a new lip spoiler to add to said deck lid. And I went out and removed the front bumper support. I think tonight's project will be to remove the fog light brackets and start straightening that stuff out as best I can. I think the biggest challenge will probably be removing that broken bolt....

Holy :poo: !! Something happened on the vert tonight!

Waiting for mud to dry in the kitchen redo #2, decided to take some time and replace the header panel and put the 3 piece headlights in that I picked up what seems like eons ago. It's just sitting in place at the moment, I still need to tighten the bumper and get the fog light bracket straightened out, but it's a leap in the right direction....

Something is about to happen to the vert again!

Nothing spectacular or anything, just going to finish getting the front nose installed and get it to move and stop under it's own power. I'm getting closer to the time to move back to Iowa, it needs to be mobile to be able to load onto a transport. And since one of the rear brakes is sticky, I figured I'd order new drums instead of paying the same price to have them turned at O'Reilly's.

Planning on getting this and my Cobra ready for the transporter this weekend. :cross:

I still need to have one arranged, but a friend here says he can hook me up with someone that hauled his Chevelle to California for some work. Everywhere I looked online gave an estimate for about $2k. He said he thinks that they could definitely beat that, so we'll see....

The brake pedal was really spongy though, then I found a couple small trails of fluid on the path that I moved the car. I haven't looked around to try to isolate the leak but I'm guessing I have a bad brake hose somewhere.

I forgot about this.... good thing I went through my thread again. Gonna have to look for that too. :cautious:

There was some action on the vert today! Gotta get it ready to transport for my move, so I tore into the brakes today. Checked all of the soft lines for signs of leaks, but they all appear dry. Didn't see any evidence of leaking wheel cylinders or calipers either. So I don't know exactly why they were spongy or where that small trail came from when I moved it.

But I think I found the culprit (or at least part of the problem....) for the sticky rear brake:

So I ordered a set of shoes, they should be here tomorrow.

Also found some previous work that looks like will need redone. Not surprising, but it is interesting.

Also picked up a Wallyworld battery for it - it started right up like it ran yesterday, so that's a bonus! Otherwise I'm kind of in a holding pattern until tomorrow on this.
