10 best v-8 engines period the mighty 5.0

Oh yeah, 90% of them were very slow. But I believe the H.O. cars were 83-84 (would have destroyed a mustang of that period) and with a 5 spd they ran with the 87-93 Stangs.


One of the Camaros i drove was the "Crossfire Injection" 305 which was the same injection setup used on the earlier '80s Corvettes...it had these cool vacuum operated scoops on the hood that would pop open when you matted the gas :rlaugh:
 
the only thing better than a dohc spinning at 6800rpm is a 5.0 spinning at 6800rpm:D
You must not have heard one of the new 4.6L 3V's running hard yet. Waaaaayyyyy sexier than any stock 5.0L i've ever heard. :nice:
NOW A 4.6 IS WHAT 287 CUBES EVEN SMALER THAN EITHER THE 305 OR 302.

That's because Jack Roush makes his millions off of a pushrod-dominated sport. Pushrods are going obsolete.

LS7 > 4.6 DOHC > 5.0


Jack Roush said he thought Ford made a mistake cutting out the Pushrods and he wished that they had followed GM, I remember back in 96 when they interviewed Vic Edelbrock and he was saying the same thing thinking that Ford was making a big mistake going Completely Modular.
 
The LS7 is indeed a pushrod motor. GM has said that they cannot get anymore out of the LS engine; they have taken it as far as they can go (I'm assuming that means streetable). Next: NASCAR motors don't put out 850hp. 550hp, sure.

The reason for eliminating pushrods is simple: Less moving parts, better timing control and less power loss from the valvetrain. (It's almost like argueing roller rockers vs. solid lifters). It shouldn't really make that much of a difference. Same flow numbers, but higher RPM capability and less chance of internal damage. The number of pushrod engines has dramatically fallen since the 80s. I would say that pushrods are GOING obsolete (not already obsolete).

Jack Roush is doing just fine with the modular engines; does Edelbrock even make modular parts? (I'm too lazy to look it up)

And no, 305 Camaros aren't great. My brother has a 1984 Z/28 with the H.O. (VIN G) with a T5, and factory 3.73s. My 5.0 stayed dead even with it...with a stock AOD and 2.73s. The Camaro has to be a mid 15 second car. Sounds good, though.

LS1s make some of the sweetest sounds to ever come from an engine. The 3v isn't far behind.
 
NASCAR is 750+ HP and the Busch Series is in the 550 Range. Jack Roush said he is just making due with what he has to work with but wishes that Ford had stuck with Push Rods, Edelbrock just does some exhaust and suspension stuff since Ford went Modular.
 
what about a 460? dont know much about that behemoth, anybody think its anygood? 5.0s still rule, 305 camaro's suck, The only ones that ever gave me a decent run was a 350 w/an auto and he still lost but besides that, I have also thought of puting a stroked dohc 4.6 into my fox. But the problem is it will be way more money to do that then to just get a wicked 302 or 351 based motor and put it in my fox. well considering mods are the same for both motors.

*I want to smack myself for not buying that DOHC Teksid mod motor* :(
 
The 460 just plays into the "bigger is better" aka "no replacement for displacement" category. Sure it's a good motor when it's not in a van, and it makes big numbers when it's built. But it's big.

Hate to say it, but HP/L is a very fair way of rating these engines. Take a 1998 DOHC mod motor, or even a 2v motor against a 1998 Explorer with a 5.0. The 2v makes 225hp and 290 ft.lbs from 281ci. The Explorer motor makes 215hp and 288 ft.lbs of torque. My handy dandy calculator says the 4.6 is making 48.91hp/L and 63.04 ft.lbs/L versus the 5.0's 43hp/L and 57.6 ft.lbs/L. Same year engine, so the technologically advanced arugement does not apply.

Another arguement: Ford's 427 OHV vs. OHC. Which made more power?

The OHV arrangement makes sense in V-style engines, but not inline. I'll admit that OHV and OHC are pretty even in V-style (in all aspects, not just noise, longevity and power), but not inline. Multi-valve setups are for top-end power, not low-end. That's what variable valve timing is for. Opening a single valve favors low-end power production, and 2 valves (obviously) helps up top.

Sidenote: S2000's "crappy" motor makes 120HP/L and 69 ft.lbs/L :D Of course, that's at 7800 RPM, though. I like revs, not flooring it and not being able to get traction.

I am glad you boys are starting to chime in. I am laughing at the thought of the 305's being even remotely fast. I have even raced em in my v-6 with bold ons and won! I have driven and ridden in about 4 and can also safely say compared to the 4 5.0's I have owned and the 10 I have driven never has a stock 305 even come close to beating a stock 5.0. Well I guess if you want to go specs in 1988 the 305 had a whopping 170 hp:rlaugh: :rlaugh: oh that would be why it beats the 225 in the GT:rlaugh: Must be the torque then... well, darn it all it only had 255 in contrast to the 300 in the GT. If you wanted to pull the weight card the iroc z weighed 3228. Not lighter than the 5.0 either, but over all I can see how you would think it was faster...:nonono:

My brother works in Nascar so believe me, I have all the info. The last time Nascar did a dyno session with the top teams it was north of 800-850hp, and the Busch cars aren't too far behind. They're probably 700+. All of your theory on pushrods vs OHC sounds great, but the cup cars spin to 9500 rpm on a regular basis, and I've seen them closer to 10k. There are also a few drag classes with small blocks spinning to 10k. Show me some mod motors putitng out that rpm.
 
I really dig the sounds of the 4.6, esp the Bullet... :drool: Still a 5.0L with Magnaflows :drool:


Besides the small block ford was first made in 1962 (221 cubic inches) 45 freaking years lol

Also nearly 280hp out of a 289 High Performance (4.8L) what is that 60HP per Liter... That's waay better than a mod motor, isn't it and the 289 is how old now?

Nascar motors have some pretty serious parts that allow that kind of RPM. Shaft mount rockers, insane bee-hive springs, titanium valve & components, light weight rotating assembly thats perfectly balanced and one insane cam that probably doesn't make any power until 5000rpm. Not to mention the work done to the Heads, intake, and carb. Those motors do put down some insane power numbers well over 800hp.
 
A 305 TPI with a 5-speed should run side by side with a 5.0, drivers race...

The L69 HO motors from the early to mid 80s also ran decent numbers.

A 305 TPI with an auto isnt bad, but dont look at the peanut cam 86s, they were somewhat slower.

I have seen enough ragged out mid to high 15 second fox bodies to know when to not throw stones!
