17 Or 18 Inch Wheels

need some ideas !! checking your thoughts on 17 or 18 wheels what will work ??1966 fastback !!! ive heard good and bad on both !! 8.8 rear diff with 11 rotors !! and using mustang steves brackets on front with 13 inch cobra brakes ! 1 inch lowered in rear 1.5 lowered in front i know i at least need a 17 and either wheel will look good . im curious about about back spacing !! 4.5 on front and rear ???

I went with the 17 inch bullits from a 2001 GT, I have no complaints. I even have the mustang steve cobra brake setup installed.

Also, wheel hub spacers may not be the best or safest choice.

Looks like a 68 from the picture.

That being said, you chose well, Falcon. The 18s might have given you clearance issues, especially up front. I like those bullets. Even though they are cheaper, I plan on getting the American Racing Torq Thrust M so I can avoid wheel spacers. And the zero offset will make the wheels look deeper, which I like.

Victor, did you buy the mustangsteve stuff or did you ask for the templates to make your own? That's what I want to do. I'm hoping he'll give me the dimensions of the cad file since I know a guy with a CNC machine. Hoping to save a little money since the cobra stuff wont be cheap.

i have a 66 fastback !! i did buy the plates from mustang steve . gona end up being a lot cheaper goin with big brakes this way

18"s look too big on a Classic, IMO. 17" is the largest I'd go.

You really cant tell the difference in a 17 or 18" wheel. Me personally will go bigger if i get new wheels.

car looks awsome !! i have looked at those wheels and like them !! what size wheels & tires and brakes did you set it up with ?

Thats not my car. I was just trying to prove a point that most people will NOT like bigger wheels nor can they tell what size they are.I have had my 17's for about 18 years and would go to 18's, but its not on my to do list right now.

As far as i know, the car had cobra brakes and the wheels are 18X7 and 18X8.

It's pretty easy to spot an 18" wheel on a '65-'66 Mustang. They look like 20"s because of the proportions of the car. 17"s can look like 16" or 18" depending on the stance of the car, backspacing, sidewall height, etc...
It's especially easier to tell wheel sizes if someone uses Ford OEM wheels from an SN95 or S197 car, IF you know your late model Mustangs.

It really depends on the car for what size rim is gonna look right.
Putting SN95 Bullitt wheels on classics was very popular when I was in High School and first got my '66. It looks good on most of the cars people do this on as they're mild restomods that've been lowered. But at the same time, I've seen this done to stock '65-'66 and it just doesn't look right. The wheel just looks too big.

But IMO, 18" is out of the gray area inhabited by 17". 18"s are just too big to me, and yes it is pretty easy to tell the difference. Again, this is just my opinion. You could take your car to West Coast Customs and have tv's, liquor bars, and aquariums put in your cars for all I care. That's just not my taste.

Don't forget the brick fireplace, chimney and waterbeds. For those of us old enough to remember the brief period in the early 70's when Hot Rod did a number of write-ups on custom vans.

Out of the grey area is a good descriptor for an 18" wheel. It's black or white at that size in terms of personal taste.

This is 17 rear 16 front. I dont think I'd want 18's myself.
