If it makes you feel any better, I spent almost 3 hours at the junk yard the other day pulling a "P head" off a '96.
I could have definitely done a little more research first. The next head only took 2 hours on '01 a couple rows over.

Air tools make everything soo much easier. I need to figure out what I need to save from explorer motor and what needs to be or can be removed.

I spent a few hours trying to get some GT40 heads out of a junkyard a few years back. Only had a few bolts left and they closed. I got nothing

I know a guy that frequents Houston pick a parts regularly. He says the "locals" use 12v cordless impacts with a car battery in a wagon and wires run to the battery from the impact. He says it'll last a looong time.

What happened to the 351W? Or are you still using it with the E7's?

It's sitting in the garage still hooked up to the aod. Not sure what I'll do with it. I'd run it with its stock heads though. Current plan is 302 with e7 heads in truck and gt40 heads on the fox. Still driving the mach 1 around. The battery in my other f150 went out so I spent time fixing that. Batteries don't last long in Arizona. Heat really kills them.

Schweet. I regrettably sold my 72 last year. But then I would have had three trucks. Had to reign in the stable a little. More than I have time for.

My goal for this truck is, and always has been, to get it on the road before the end of the year. Many projects just sit and sit because I didn't want to compromise my plans for it and then the project goes bye bye after sitting waiting for money or parts. So I am trying a different route with getting this one on the road with the least amounts of compromise and keeping it simple. The power plant plan is simple, ford v8. 351 needs a total rebuild. Parts for it are turning out to be more expensive to include a carb intake. The 302 I picked up was running and might just get away with a rering. Also parts are cheap and I can get a nice edelbrock intake used if I run carb. Once the truck is running incan always upgrade or trade out parts. Like the rear, i wanted to run a 4 link but the cost for coil overs or bags put that out of reach. Spring perches were fairly cheap to run on the stock leaf springs. I can change that out later if I want to go 4 link.

I'm not saying the 351 won't get used. Just not right now.

Boxes and boxes of accessories and random engine parts is all that's cluttering up my "garage" right now. Pretty sad stuff. Don't realize how many times you said "I might need that someday" until you have to pack it all

Weather is starting to cool a little here sometime to start hitting this again. I found a way to keep the stock 302 motor mounts with a bracket that I plan to build. Pretty basic and simple. Before incan commence the fabrication I need a rear sump or a foxbody oil pan to make sure I have the correct clearances. Anyone have one laying around they don't want or need. Pm me.

I still need to make a brake for the trailing arms and will have those done before I drop the motor in. Can't wait to get back into this thing.

So I doubt this thing will be up and running before Jan 1. Been a busy year and hot summer. While the progress has slowed the stock piling of parts hasn't. I looked at the thread with
@95BlueStallion @madmike1157 about the trans i got and didn't the additional price tag of $700 for the control tag so I switched gears to a aod from an 88 Ford. Picked it up fairly decent price and going to rebuild it myself.

I decided to just rebuild the motor instead of a rering. I have no idea what life it has had and why it was pulled (aside from what PO said). Also, when it is up and running i want to be able to get in and drive without having to worry about motor sealing properly. Going to do a simple rebuild on it with E7 heads that are coming off my notchback. Slight porting on heads The gt40s will go into the fox. Should be plenty of power for a little cruiser truck.

I got my tilt steering column with drop bracket or the summer. Bench seat out of a Chevy truck. A little wide but I will narrow the bracket a little and modify the upholstery.

Still love the project just busy with house work. The 65 mustang is in the garage debating if it will get the 289 or the 302 from the fox eventually

IF it was me, the only thing I'd do differently is this:

Cut the roof off the 65 coupe, and turn it into a FB. If I had one sitting in my garage, and now considering that there are you tube how to's on how to do that, I'd have me a FB 65 mustang (my new coveted, gotta have) sitting down there instead.

NOTHING would stop me from doing that.

I am not a fan of a 1965 fb. I actually prefer the coupe until 67. Even then, the cost and resources are beyond me for now. Not saying I wouldn't try.

My engine hoist is at a friends house right now so I have to wait to mock up the motor and trans.

I feel your pain on being busy. I actually completely abandoned my plan of swapping my 351w drivetrain into my Explorer. I sold the Ranger as a whole, bought a motorcycle to tinker with and enjoy, and will just be throwing wheels and tires on the Explorer for kicks (because I cant leave anything 100% stock). I am the type that while the engine was out, I would want it rebuilt. Then after its rebuilt I would want it to look fresh on the outside too (insert accessory drive kit, new vc's, air cleaner, etc). It would have snowballed fast, so I said F it. Maybe later in life.

Silly question, do you know if I can use a stock mustang or explorer flywheel with the 88 aod I just got?
