The humidity right now isn't as bad as when it heats up more for us.

The paint might take slightly longer to dry between coats when it's raining. When the humidity reaches closer to 100 percent, it's more difficult for the paint we spray to release the solvents due to the air being saturated. If it's hot in addition to the humidity, you will have the additional problem of catalyzed products wanting to harden before the solvents are released from the surface. The surface will skin over and you will still have solvents wanting to get out.

This will in most cases just lead to a slight hazing of the finish (it's a mild form of solvent pop) that can be buffed back to a nice shine.

Solvent pop is when the surface skins over on top and the unreleased solvents that make the product thin enough to spray and flow out still come out of the paint, leaving tiny little holes in the surface. If you really hammer the paint on you can see more extreme versions of this where you can actually see the holes that the solvent popped through the surface to get out.

That's why you'll want to slow down more than usual between coats. If the humidity is up and the solvents aren't being released as quickly as on a dryer day, you will want to slow down the application of more coats. Allow each coat enough time to get what it can out.

I'm not talking long delays, maybe an extra four or five minutes between coats. The majority of the solvents come out of the paint fairly quick, mostly during the atomization of it when it sprays out of the gun. By design some stays in to allow the paint to flow smoother on the panel you are painting.

If you get the extreme kind of solvent pop that you can easily see, you are screwed in general and will have to sand it smooth and reshoot. You most likely won't have this problem though if you don't rush it and you don't lay each coat on super heavy.

We are supposed to have rain on Wednesday, I guess that will be your Thursday rain.

BTW, the weather coming your way can include butt loads of hail. We had a small tornado on the other side of town. It was moving about 25mph when it left here. It'll be a damp day for you painting. I thought I was swimming at work yesterday, at least it's not hot yet.

I'm gonna prep. The door handles,hinges, grille, headlight bezels, both bumpers, exhaust tip (G-hole) and cooler shroud, are all going body color. Sunday,...(if it don't rain) will be paint day, and all of those small pieces are gonna be Competition Orange. I really don't have the room in addition to having the monster in the garage to paint small pieces, so all of that is gonna happen outside under a new 10 x 20 EZ UP the wife bought me for Christmas. That said, It'll have to NOT be raining when I do that. Since we're on that subject,..I never know (because it's never on any instructions) what gun pressure I'm supposed to spray at. I always just put the gun at something like 30-40 PSI flowing, and go with it. Spraying AE, what's the recommended triggered gun pressure?

It's a 1.4 tipped gravity feed gun that came in a kit courtesy of the fine folks at Home Depot. Branded Husky. (I'm thinkin it should've been branded "Sha-ya", or as I like to write it,....... 沙哑)

Ok,....Awhile since I've updated things here. On the other forum I frequent, I said that my goal today (my day off) was to get several things ready for paint.. (I know! I'm actually talking about the same paint that will go on the car!!) Instead of painting the car, and then chasing after the small parts that might not get the attention they need in an effort to get it all done,..I'm doing things the other way around. So, The items on the plan that needed prepping today were both bumpers, the front oil cooler shroud, the rear exhaust tip, the hinges, and the grille and headlight bezels. All of these pieces will be the same color as the body.

These things are pretty much ready to go. The only thing that showed its ass was the rear bumper. After it got in primer, a line showed up that looked like a wonky body filler fillet. Only problem was there was no body filler on top of the bumper. The only thing I can figure is that it must be some kind of collateral damage when I made the rear tail light panel and was shaping/sanding the bottom edge.

So,...I had to fill that line. That meant a couple of steps backwards.

It's primed back in this pic, but the top of the rear bumper is just a mess. All of that grinding, sanding and shaping has made the bumper really wonky on top. I have more work to do to get it decent.

Finally,...Proving a point that muriatic acid is the go-to for removing rust quickly, I dipped my front bumper brackets.

They started out typically skanky.

These things were not especially rusty, but my muriatic acid has been used one time too many I think. Instead of taking 5 minutes, this time it took some elbow grease, and ten minutes.

But nonetheless,...I succeeded.

The one byproduct of using this stuff is that it strips the metal bare, but it has to be neutralized with water. As to be expected, running water on absolutely raw metal leaves a very small window before the rust you stripped off starts coming back (like,...... minutes) By the time that pic was taken after the parts were dry and the things were already turning orange.

I sprayed them with that junk that stops the progression, and renders the rust dead.

So then,.....Sunday. I called the president. I've submitted a request to change the name of the day. I'm thinking it needs to be called.......................... Orange day.

Just like any good book, I've decided it appropriate to include a dedication so as to acknowledge the entire contingent of this threads membership.

At last Thursdays' update I stated that weather permitting, I was gonna attempt to change all of the grey colored stuff orange.

Weather permits. Coincidentally, so does circumstance. The wife is gonna go see her mom in Fla. and plans to leave today when she gets up. That leaves me unencumbered. (sorry,..no better word works to describe the situation). It's all me today.

I got an el cheapo 10 x 20 EZ up for Christmas from said wife, and it's been sitting in it's bag until the Alabama sun justifies putting it up. It's only gonna get to 75 degrees today, and that still isn't really justification for putting the thing up, but given the fact that I need some covered space outside of the garage to try and keep the dirt/pollen/bugs off of my newly painted junk, there is no better reason to put the thing up.

Since I haven't actually seen the thing erected, I only got a picture. I think the thing also has a perimeter, zippered bug screen, but until it goes up,...I can't say for sure. But wouldn't that just be the sht?

I plan to go get some 2 x 4's to build the racks stands that will do more than hold the bumpers. I'll probably configure them so they'll hold doors and fenders when that time comes, so some planning is involved.

Maybe @Davedacarpainter can scrounge up a pic of the real stand that he uses to hold a panel vertically that I can copy?

My tm Trashy MacPherson TR17 work stand only goes so far.

Before any paint can happen I still have to fix the "wonky rear bumper" that I described in the last update, and prep and prime the door handles that I forgot to dig out last time, so I guess that I'm gonna have to get at it.

You know, it seems like it's far away from that ever happening, but it's not. If I can get it painted by end of April like I want to,........It'll be like a heavy fog lifting on a summer day.

That's the way it was with my son's car, Mike. After that, it seemed everything just clipped along. I could count remaining tasks on my fingers. It won't be long. I'm excited for you!

Ok, Mike's Polyester Paint Pavillion is up....

The rear bumper needs one more coat of primer, and it becomes....unwonky.

T-minus 2 hours to paint.

OK @Davedacarpainter ...It's 75 degrees. I got Shopline AE. I got the same brand catalyst, I got a hot weather reducer.

HVLP gun, 1.4mm tip, Gun pressure, we'll start at what 20 psi? and wait between coats please?
