I was reading
@TOOLOW91 ’s build thread, and based on his discovery, decided to look into my fuel filtration system for possible restriction to flow. He uses better stuff than I do, since I have a thing for using Summit branded sht, but between the two of us the filter arrangement is basically the same. A -8 housing containing a 100 micron prefilter element coupled to a similar -8 housing that has a 10 micron filter element. I wanted to determine if those two filters were dirty enough to cause a restriction to fuel flow. Not known for getting too scientific when it comes to testing stuff to determine its serviceability, I decided to use the facial air pressure method to gauge that restriction.
I blew through them.
The 100 micron housing offered zero restriction. it was as easy as blowing through a 1/2” diameter tube.
The 10 micron housing was a different story however...there was noticeable restriction. If blowing through the thing was restricted, fluid movement would probably be even more restricted. I decided to replace that element.
But, as with all things these days,....that item was not in stock, and wouldn’t be until 8/4. Which brings me back to Jeff’s thread.
He had done the same thing, and had the same end result. He replaced the 10 micron with a less restrictive 40 micron. So since he had boldly gone where someone had gone before, I decided to follow. When checking stock at Summit, they have a filter with a 40 micron element in stock..and going by the pictures, it looked to be similar enough to the housing I had in place to be a direct swap.
So I order it.
When the thing gets here yesterday, I get this tiny assed little box...I think, This can’t be right, the filter Im replacing is huge, and this little chicken peen sized box can’t possibly be a -8 anything..
But sure enough..

It more than passes facial pressure test though, it blows through as easily as the 100 micron unit does. But i’m gonna have to adapt the fuel lines under to car to make up for how much shorter it is than the one I’m replacing it with. How long it’ll be before this thing plugs up is a wait-n-see...but for today, it’s gonna have to do. I’ll make sure not to modify my fuel lines where I won’t be able to put the old housing back in place once they get that new element back in stock.
Im waiting on my boys at HF to open. I’m gonna go buy a couple of those Bauer li-ion cordless drivers, now that the 3/8” drill ive had for a month has passed the test. I gotta remove the flexplate to give me access to the rear of the oil pan where there is.......
A fckin leak.
Im just gonna clean the area..and goop it. This leak looks to be a gasket ( since i used silicone as a gasket). Evidently I didn’t get a part of the mating surface properly gooped when i put the pan on, and now oil has found a way out..( why won’t this sht just stay in the pan?)
Having a 3/8 impact driver will make quick work of removing and reinstalling the flexplate, and i’ve always wanted cordless impact stuff anyway,...so that will be how I start this day.
