Has anyone had a tachometer do this?
Move to tech if needed?

yeah mine did it. 4 cylinder.

4 cylinder tachs are a dime a dozen, picked up another one and it's been fine so far

I feel like with a name like that, we have similar thought process. That is the plan.

Did you inspect your old one for the failure? I know the solder cracks, but never seen one go full send.

I've seen it happen (on friends cars), but never investigated the cause. Just swapped out the tach.

Meh she built the last 3 motors. One in the kitchen, I’m okay with it as it justifies my next expense.

This what I had to do. While mine didn't peg out, it would go crazy after 2000 rpm. Had to pony up for another...

Holy crap, you let her in the kitchen too?! There are knives and fire in there. Man, you live on the edge.

Just for clarities sake, the 2.3l tachometer won't work with your 5.0L. You will need to source a 5.0L tachometer. You can also call local speedometer repair shops and see what they would charge to fix it.

So looking into this more. Will the 87-89 140 mph tach work on a 1993?

I *think* it won't work because the air bag cars had a different gauge cluster.

It’s shaped differently. You’ll want 90-93 for direct bolt in

2.3l tach will pop right in but it won't read correctly.. and yeah you'll want a 90-93 due to the different shape of the cluster housing.

just clarifying, mine is a 4 cylinder and I swapped in a 4 cyl tach to replace the ruined 4 cylinder tach

4 cyl tach won't work with v8, well it will but it won't read anywhere near correct

haven't tried to repair it, me and electronics do not agree with each other thus I just left it in a box with a bunch of other "projects" for wintertime

I wonder if these are repairable. The last time I dissected a guage cluster, I did note that these seem to be made out of pretty common electical components. Probably a few cents each from Mouser.

A common problem I read into is the solder cracking and just needed resolved.
However that usually the cases were it bounces. Mine as you can see went full send
