1998 Gt 225 hp BS?

I have a 98 gt and I don't believe there is a big difference compared to the 96-97. If I were you I would just get a 96-98 gt with the lowest possible miles and do a headswap or small nitrous kit. But yes the 98's do have 225 BHP and 290 TQ. Also get a five speed coupe and get gears as your first mod. 3.73's at least and that will help make up for some of the lack of power. If I where you though and your really looking into going fast I would start with a 99+ because you already have a good foundation with the PI heads and better gearing. You can usually get 99's and 2000's for pretty cheap now.

If you are looking to save some bucks and like the body style better, I agree with sk8erdude and go for the best condition 96-98 you can find. Not much difference between those years to make a significent difference in performance. If you can swing the extra money and like the new body style as well, getting the extra boost in power of the newer models makes a lot of sense as well. Don't know what my stock dyno numbers looked like, but with the stock (non-PI heads), my car has dyno'd at approx. what a stock 99+ puts down. Mods are located in sig. Didn't take much to get there, but there is no denying that PI heads would have me at 30+hp and that the 99+ would be higher with the same mod list. Good luck in finding a good one.

thanks for all the help guys, i guess im attracted too the 96-98 gt's because of the few things, well the insuranve is gonna be cheaper than the newer ones since im only 18. And i kinda have too get the slowest one besides the v6 made because my parents think im gonna kill myself.Which really does not make sence because i keep telling them on how slow they are and i currently own a honda civic thats about as fast as a gt(dont flame please i know, im traiding it in haha). But can you guys give a few words on describing how slow they are stock and give comparable cars? That way i can show them it.Also i will be traiding my car in and paying the difference myself.I am not the average kid who acts like a ass because he has some Hot Wheels or something, i dont drive it like that and take respect for my vehicles.Thank You

well now... if your car is as fast as a gt then you should know how fast a gt is right?
i think my car is fast if i were to compare it to a civic, well wait there is no comparison... all the flaming aside whats your civic run the 1/4 in? if you have money in it then why are you going to trade it in? your going to get taken... sell it yourself!

well my car currently is about as fast as a stock gt around low 15's high 14's. Im selling it because i am sick of stupid import ****, in my town no one has domestics it is all rice.I know of about 2 domestic cars here, and they are like exotic in my area haha.Well i want too get the mustang because my car rattles and shakes and i have learned alot from the mods i did too it and i wouldnt make the same mistake with the stang, basically it would all go too the engine.I also like seeing a difference with modifications while with a civic you have too spend about 3k before you notice anything, but a set of gears on a stang is complete opposite.

yea i have tried selling it myself i even have it on autotrader as we speak. I found a beautiful laser red 96 gt at my local chevy dealer and the car is like brand new honestly, besides the 71k miles im gonna only have too pay about 1k in difference. So i was happy about that.
My car is a 98 and has 100,000 mile honda warranty on it, and only 52k on it so i got a decent allowance.Allthough the place is selling the car for 9700 which is waayyyy too high, they go for more like 6k here. The guy said he is going too drop a price because the thing never gets any intrest.

Instead of spending $13-15k on a 13.9 second 99+ GT why not spend 11-12K on a 96-98 Cobra. Sure, stock for stock they run about even with the GT's. But slap in some gears to get them into their powerbands and then the GT is toast. Their is so much more potential in the 4V motors it doesn't make sense to drop the cash on a used GT when a Cobra would be about the same or less.

 96-98 Cobras are faster then 99+ GT's, it's most evident in the trap speeds. Most GT's trap 98-100mph stock, whereas Cobras trap 102-103. The vast majority of 99+ GT's i've seen at the track that were stock ran low 14's (~14.2). I think that's about normal. I also think high 13's are the norm for stock cobras.

At a first glance, someone might think the 96-98 Cobra would destroy a 99+ GT, seeing that the GT has 260hp and the snake 305hp. I guess sooner peak HP and the same TQ #'s are what keep the GT close.

Sorry to hijack the thread, just wanted to respond to this. :hail2: To contribute, my friend has a '95 GT, and it's very slow.

in comparison to a civic, then any stang would be much cooler. you can tell your parents that 96-96 mustang gt is only as about as fast as the newest nissan altima, acura cl, or honda accord. in fact im pretty sure those cars are faster. as time goes on they just keep uping the horse power your parents car could be as fast as your gt depending on what they have.

While the 94-98 stang GT is slow in comparison to other cars in its class, its going to be MUCH faster than all of those cars you mentioned. They are all heavy SUV's, and are going to need a LOT more then 250hp to keep up with the GT. The Tundra does 0-60 in the 9's, the Lexus in the 8's-9's, and the Jeep probably in the 10's. The stang GT 5spd is mid-high 6's.

Hmmm...If your near SC., I will sell you my '96 GT vert.....yeah,yeah, I know, and on top of that it's an auto....now for the kicker. It's a rare factory option car....it's purple(cobra color i believe) with a white top and white leather seats and center console and bottom part of the dash. I have put BBK underdrive pullies, dynomax cat back, and a k&n filter. It runs strong and has ~110k miles. I aslo have PI heads(complete, of a 99 saleen) and the intake plenum to go with the car.

You're only 18? You don't belong in a V8...you'll shoot your eye out. :rlaugh:

Well, I don't know about him, but I would have killed myself if I'd had my car at his age...too foolish. Then again, that's just me...

Oh, no, it's not just you. Can't tell you how many teens I see doing really stupid stuff with their ricers...like racing around corners in parking lots. Some of the stuff they do would get them killed in a Stang.

BTW, stangizer10, if you DO get a Mustang, be very aware that driving a rear wheel drive car is completely different from driving a front wheel drive car. Many of us older guys grew up driving RWD cars and know what to expect, but with the prevalence of FWD now, I suspect that few if any of you younger guys have any experience with RWD. It's quite a different ball of wax, especially on anything other than a dry road.

You said you're 18 right? Buy whatever the hell you want. Unless, of course, your parents hold the title to your Civic.

Insurance will be high. It is not a Fart Canned 4. Do not buy a Cobra, it will be worse. A Good option would be to buy a the newer V6 or older one and stick a supercharger on it. You can these cars really cheap.
Lower insurance. You take the insurance savings and use it for further mods instead of giving it away to your insurer- Rearend Swap, gears etc. It will be fast! 99 + = 190hp to like 250hp.

I started out with rear wheel drive because I am over 40 so I know how to drive them. Your generation has not. You must learn these cars tendencies.
A good thing to do is to go to a vacant parking lot and thrash it around when it is wet to get a feel for it. Try drifting and such and also do this in the dry.
Young people get killed in Stangs and Camaros because they think they can drive them like FWD cars. All you need to remember is to never nail it going around corners especially in slick conditions. These cars will snap around on you before you know it. Be safe.
