They dont like to not be turned (i.e. if someone 'belts' around the pump for a long time, the pump might not like being spun again). Good luck.

I think you are thinking of the check valve in the line from the pump. It keeps backfires from making it back to the pump (which can damage the pump). The pump does not really care what it pumps to, otherwise.
