2000 GT Turbo Tuning Question

I have a 2000 GT 5 speed that I am currently gathering all the gear needed for a Rear Mount turbo set up. I have a predator tuner on the way, and will installing a wideband o2 sensor. I am currently stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, so a dyno tune is out of the question. I have two questions, first, will a predator MAF extender allow me to use my stock MAF, or do I need to go with a Lightning 90mm for 42# injectors, and second, how do I get a custom tune sent to me via email for the predator? I plan to boost 6.5 psi, and stay between 11.5 to 12.5 A/R, I believe this will put me in the 400-450 rwhp range. I know it seems difficult, but I gotta rip my buddies Skyline GT.

Why rear mounted? You should just by a kit with everything in it such as

Turbo Kits for Ford Mustangs

And just FYI, you will not get anywhere near your hp numbers on just 6.5 psi. Plus un Japan, don't they do a lot of tuning? I am sure you could get the car on the rollers somewhere and just use sniper special forces to create your own tune(if no one uses SCT or diablo).

Rear mount turbo for 2000 GT

I have asked everyone I know that is local, the Japanese will not touch an American car, so rollers here is out of the question. I want to go with a rear mount because it will be custom, by me, and according to sites like DIY Junkyard turbos and STS, 6.5 lbs will get me pretty close to those numbers. I still need to know if anyone would or could do a custom tune using data logging and a predator tuner.

What year skyline and what mods and or how much boost is he running? Older skylines with stock or a little higher boost you should have no problems beating him!

6.5 psi will MAYBE get you onto the mid 300's

a rear mount is a huge PITA and is really just an unnecessary headache. why run oil feed lines that far then have to run a scavenge pump to pump the return oil back to the engine. not to mention the lag you will get from all that unneeded piping. mount it up front and turn it to about 12 psi and you will be happy.

BTW i would send the diablo back and get the SCT pro racer package. i dont think anyone had tuned with diablo for the past 10 years!


in all honesty you will be better off to buy a vortech or paxton for the same or less than you will have in a turbo and make reliable power and have a BOLT ON install. i have a feeling this build will never be more than a money pit and a shop full of useless parts. there is a reason you see so many s/c cars, they are EASY and make good power

Well, I guess that is the point. Anyone can make power with bolt ons, I want to do something custom, and I like the idea of a rear mount. I can do the whole kit for about $700, so I am no where close to a supercharge in price.

A turbo that is worth a crap should cost you $700 by itself. What turbo are you going to run? Just remember, you get what you pay for. If the price seems to good to be true, then it probably is.

As for your question, There are a few companies out there that do remote tuning. They will send you some software, have you run your car a certain way for a certain period of time, data log everything, then send it back to them. After that, they will break down all the data, write you a tune, and send it back. I think the company name is poweradder solutions or something like that. I will have to call a buddy of mine and ask.

FYI, non of us are trying to bash you for the rear mount idea. All of us just know what kind of pita the rear mount systems are. Of course STS is going to tell you the rear mount's are awesome, because that's what they specialize in. They are hoping that you build a rear mount kit, have all sort's of problems with it, and then say screw it and buy one of their rear mount kit's. I have had 3 different friends run rear mount turbo set up's on their cars. 2 GTO's and 1 vette. All 3 were constantly having issues with them. All 3 sold their kit's and went with a front mount. All 3 are still daily driving their car's to this day w/ 0 issues AFTER ditching the rear mount.

2000 GT Turbo

I am going to use a Garret turbo. I bought a pair of them from a guy who upgraded his RX7, and rebuilt them, including the ball bearing conversion. They have a built in waste gagte set at 14 psi, so I am going ot have to add an external waste gate as well. They are .64 AR turbuine and .78 AR Compressor, so they will spool fast, virturally illiminating the lag. I already have the scavenging pump, the turbos, and the tuner. I am waiting on some exhaust pipe and pieces so I can fab the kit. I have access to a mandrel bender and a welder, so the fab will only take a day. I have not decided which way to go for the MAF and injectors, but they are the last piece of the pie. I just need to make sure I can get this tuned conservatively via email until I rool back to the states, then I will go forged internals and push some power.

Okay, I have a quick question. I would like to install the SVT fuel pump the next time I need gas. Can I do this without any other mods, I am upgrading to the 255 lph pump. Secondly, do I need a fuel pressure regualtor?

hows the turbo kit coming along? ...and yeah, you can do the svt focus pump without any mods. Just drop the tank, take out the stock pump, switch in the svt pump and youll be good to go.

The turbo is coming along nicely, the biggest obstacle is the lag time for mail to Japan. I am waiting for my wideband and boost gauge now. I think I might put a oil sending unit in the scavenge pump return line so I wil know if there is a problem there. Custom fab looks great, and I found a source for a custom tune via my predator, so things are shaping up nicely.

Might be a good idea to get a new fuel tank gasket. It goes between the flange and the tank. Also make sure your pump kit has a new sock filter that goes on the end of the pump. That should be it.
