255's on 17's: will they rub in front?

I just ordered some 93 Cobra style rims - 17X8.5 for my 88 GT. My car is lowered about 1" in the front and I have stock replacement A-arms.

Will I be okay with 255/40 tires up front or will they rub?

I have 17X8 +30mm offset wheels with 5.72 inches of backspacing on my 91 notch. They have 245-45-17's on there, and they rub the back of the K-frame on a full turn.

The Cobra style wheels a 17X8.5 with a +26mm offset and 5.72 inches of backspacing. Even though the backspacing is the same the wheel will sit outward +4mm because 30mm offset vs. 26mm offset. This means the wheel and tire will be 4mm further from the suspension. This will give you a little bit more clearance than what I have.

yea, i wouldnt go more than a 245...even a 245 will rub a little when turning all the way...

I have 17" cobras on my 88 with 255s on the front and they rub if I crank the wheel all the way.

I have the same setup 17'' 93 cobra style wheels with 255 40 17. I get a little bit of rubbing at full turn on uneven pavement, I also have the eibach prokit.
I'm not sure if they are a 9"wheel anyone know....I got them from americanmuscle.com

Thanks guys. I really wanted to keep my tires the same size on all 4 corners so I could rotate them - and I was looking for a compromise. I definitely don't want anything narrower than 255 on the back.....I guess I'll just suck it up and go with 245/40's on the front and 265/40's on the back.

So I guess the next question is: Will I have to roll the fenders and/or flip the quad shocks to fit 265/40 17's in the back? I shouldn't, right?

Depends. 265 on an 8" wheel, maybe. 265's on a 9" wheel I would say yes. I can tell you tonight. I'm putting the quads on my 91 with 245-45's on a 17X8 wheel. I'll take a measurement for you.

My 245s on Cobras rub with no lowering, I wouldnt run a 255.

I have a full dugan racing suspension setup and my car is loww and the previous owner put 255/45/17's on it which are too wide and tall, but they only rub my front fender extension my car is an 89. With the way my car is set up, i think that if i had 91+ fenders/extensions I would be fine. I am still going to go to 255/40 or a 245/45

I ran 255/40s on a 9 inch wheel up front and never had a problem. I now have them on an 8 inch wheel an still no problems.

I'm with MAC, I had 255/40/17s on 17x8 wheels and had very little rubbing on the front. I have more rubbing with the 245/45/17s I have now. The 255s are actually shorter tires, and therefore have less opportunity to rub the fender wells. The A arm rubbing I've had is always with the wheel turned all the way, and additional rack spacers in the inner tie rod boots solves that problem.

I plan on running 17x9 03 cobras up front with a 255 sumi HRTZ III, not sure what spindles I will use yet, probably 96+ since that gives an extra 8mm

I run 255's in the front with 17x9 rims and sn95 spindles, lowered with steeda springs. rubbing only took place when at full lock turning. i bought spacers to prevent full lock and no problems now.

In my opinion 245's on a 9 inch rim look streched.

I have 255s up front on a 9 inch rim they dont rub except the rim on the control arm but when I went from 245 to 255 the car wanders a lot more now and has baddd bump steer.

Ok i am going to put 10th anv cobra wheels on my notch when i do
a 5lug over the winter. My car is lowered with b'springs so what size
tire should i run?

Tire size shouldn't affect bumpsteer at all. Maybe you need an alignment?


On a 9 inch wheel on a fox, 255/40's look the best and 275's look the best on the back in my opinion.

Could be but I've heard other people say the same thing and it was fine until I put those on.
