289 Heads

i have been seeing people say that they put 289 heads on their 302 block, what does this acomplish. can i keep my top end the same with out changing anything.

out side of that is their any economical heads out there that would be a good upgrade from stock, is a GT40 head my only choice? i know that sitting on my 302 now is iron heads so im assuming they are stock.

i never had them on 1 of my motors but this guy i knew said that the 289 heads had a small cc and the comp ratio is raised.

exactly . . . I think the factory chamber is around 54cc on the 289 heads.

The only problem is sealing up the water passages to the intake . . . not hard just make sure you adequately seal it with rtv.

All they do is raise compression. The early non-Thermactor 289 heads will also disable some of the smog pump system. You would be better off having the E7s worked over or buying GT40s, Roush iron heads, or shopping around for some used aluminum heads.

thanks for the info, i am pretty happy running on pump gas right now so i think i will look into some GT40's or some used aluminums as suggested.

Unless you can find a good pair of Hi-Po 289 heads for next to nothing, I'd say don't bother. You can find good used GT40 and GT40P heads in ebay for not more than $300. If your budget can stretch to $500 or more, you might get lucky and find a pair of used aluminium heads.

wow . . . need to clean up some here.

289 heads can be ported (hi-po ports/valves are exactly the same) to produce results on par with ported e7s.

I have seen a few 6 second 1/8 mile passes from 289 heads.

all of my friends say go aluminum or GT40. if i run across a set of cheap sound 289 heads i might do some tinkering but i will probably end up holding off for a set of aluminum heads.
