I bought a engine that should be a 302, but im begining to wonder because it said 289 inside the intake.

The engine code is: C5AE-6015E

When did the 302 come on the marked ?

The C5AE-E is a 289 block , but could have a 302 crank in it, making it a 302. Only way to know for sure is to check the crank and rods.

oh ok...well with the 65 #'s it's probably a 289 but it could be a 302 if it's ever been opened up and had a 302 crank put in there. we did that on our '67 convertible. it was a c-code 289, dropped a 302 crank in there, and voila, we have a 302

If the crank is stamped 1M then 289, 2M is a 302. C3 rods are 289 rods, c8 rods for the 302. could be either if it was rebuilt. could even have a 289 crank with 302 rods. just look for the stamp on the first crank counter weight.

According to the High Performance Ford Parts Interchange book, the C5AE-E could be either, but these books are known for their mistakes, The best way to Id a Hi-po block for sure is to look at the main caps. They're thicker than the std caps from top to bottom.

mod, just curious how you determined it was a Hi-Po? It makes no difference to me but if you ever decide to sell the ride, you sure don't want to mislead someone by telling them it is a Hi-Po.

The biggest car club in Norway, ACCN (www.amcar.no) found it out. They have the scandinavian biggest car books library and found that out when i gave them all the codes on the engine

Its not a Hi-Po any more... If it has the 302 crank, its just a 289 with a 302 crank. Its the tested & stamped crank that really made the Hi-Po what it was... There was no real difference in blocks.

Good catch! Do not want to put anyone down, but we must keep this stuff clean for future "Mustangers" to enjoy.

It is not a "Hi Po" if it is a 302, unless it is called a "302 Hi-Po".
