Gentleman and Ladies,
I am swapping a 289 with a 351w in a 1968 Mustang. I know this swap has been done bunches of times but I'm having trouble finding the information I am seeking. Can anyone tell me:
What the hidden costs will be?
What are the things to watch out for?
What new items I will have to get?
I know I will need new accessory brackets. (all of them?) I don't have A/C on the car presently but am planning to install this feature with aftermarket parts.
I already have the 351w in running condition so other engine types or engine modifications are not in my plans.
Thanks for your info and help.

It's taller and wider, but most things bolt up. The exhaust manifolds are different on a 351, so you will have to modify there. There are swap headers available, I think.

The radiator is different too. I believe the lower hose is on opposite sides. If thae motor is complete, I think those two items are the biggest expenses.

Use your 289 timing cover and water pump if the outlet is different than yours.
The accessory stuff should be fine.
Use your 289 flexplate to be sure your retain compatability with the tranny.
The exhaust manifolds are different from car to car as well as engine to engine, but in this case you have plenty of room and the 289/351 parts bolt up fine with each other.
Start out trying your 289 manifolds/headers, they should work fine, if not, try the 351 parts and check clearances. If you have no luck there, you will need headers. The standard headers for a 289 in your car are also the same part number for a 351w in your car... unless you go to upscale headers with larger tubes, then you will need spendier 'swap' headers.
Oil pan to intake will have to be 351w, but accessories, exhaust, pulleys, tranny parts, mounts, balancer, water, timing cover, fuel pump, and most everything else that mounts to the outside of the long block will be reuseable from the 289.
Easy swap.
Good luck

Thanks for the good info.
Now comes the fun part.

I read somewhere that the original radiator will not be up to the job of cooling this bigger motor.
Any input?
You're correct on the radiator, Ford had a habit of putting too small a radiator on a lot of 60's cars. Get a big block radiator for your car ( 390 ) To use it, you will also need the big block radiator bracket to secure it.
