Hi guys,
I am looking at buying a 2001 Mustang Cobra here in Australia for about 50k AUD. Car is in mint condition and roars like a lion. With 25k on the clock. Being a Mustang/Cobra enthusiest this will be my first purchase of one. I had a few questions that I was hoping a Mustang expert could answer before I buy the car:

1. What are these cars worth now in the USA? I believe they initially sold for 17k USD when they came out. Have they appreciated or depreciated in value is what I would like to know.
2. Is there any reason to think they may/should appreciate in value?
3. The car has a USA export sticker inside its door which says it was exported by the Ford Motor Company. This struck me as strange but according to the owner Ford USA exported 200 factory manufactured right hand drive Cobras to Australia. Anyone know if this is true or not?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Actually it was 2002, and they exported 100 cobras out

They sold for more than $17,000 for a 2001 Cobra when they were new. Hell you could'nt even get a GT for that price unless you had a serious hook-up and even then that would have been a plain-jane GT. What is 50K AUD converted to USD?

2. Is there any reason to think they may/should appreciate in value?

it's not an authentic '70 LS6 Chevelle convertible we're talking about, but they won't drop off in value as quickly as a GT. if you want a collecter's car look elsewhere, if you want a car to drive and have fun with an 'o1 Cobra is a good bet

they were a little under $30k US new for a coupe, little more for a vert

is it LHD?

Sounds like a bad deal to me but then again thats only because they sell for 15K over here. Really depends on how much it is worth to you.

Thanks for the info. The one other 01 for sale is selling at $57k AUD. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for a car that only 100 exist in Australia. Seems to still have a good value.

Having said that I went on the weekend and offered him $48k. He refused to negotiate at all and was quite rude so walked out. He then rang me today saying that he could go as low as 49k. I said I am not interested as I have decided to privately import one from the USA. If I was going to spend 50k on 2k1 car I may as well spend an extra 10k and get a Mustang GT imported from the USA. He then offered me the car for 48k… lol.

Think Ill just wait and import one from the USA directly. Will cost me 60~70k AUD. Crazy huh?

Good luck on your purchase...that would be cool to be in a country that doesnt have alot of American Musclecars & be able to be one of the few to have 1. Mustangs are so common over here I cant even fathom the idea of them being considered rare.

I love 99-01 cobra's, but i hope the ones your lookin @ dont look like the australian ones Ive seen, because that front fascia is hideous.... What were they thinkin with all those foglights????

so are Mustangs in Australia kinda like Skylines here in the States?

what about cars like newer Camaros, Firebirds and Vettes?

Skylines, including GTR are common. Apart from Australian made cars (like the Falcon and Commodore) the most common cars on the road are Japanese. Old US muscles cars are uncommon. A 69 mustang will still turn heads.

The newer muscle cars - like the 2k1 Cobra are ultra rare. Ive never seen one ever apart from this one. 05, 06 or 07 - forget it. Same with corvettes. Seen one or two 1980/90 model cars but nothing newer and I count the ones Ive seen on one hand.

I'd say ive seen more Hummers than I have late model mustangs and corvettes. Never seen a firebird that wasnt 40 years old.

Thank you. I've decided to go ahead and buy it after I make the salesmen sweat a bit ;) Ill post some pics when I get it.

For us muscle car lovers here in Oz US made cars are the ultimate. Throw in how rare they are (and expensive if you do buy one) and they are pretty unique. The Cobra will definetly be a head turner.

I prefer them over the Australian muscle cars. Not that the Aussie ones are bad but growing up, especially with the movies, the US ones are much more romaticised.

Thats what it looks like. Though I think it looks a lot better in action ;)

What do the US ones look like? Shouldnt be too hard to modify if it looks good. Driving/fog lights are all the rage here. Most Australian cars have at least 4 sets of lights if not more. Our roads are a lot emptier and darker than US ones I expect. I think this is the main reason for these design decisions. And at night the extra lights do make my Ford Falcon XR8 look pretty mean. Like some kind of giant hulking insect.

Anyone know the storey behind the 100 Cobras exported to Oz? like why? Ill ring Ford Australia when I have the VN number and see if they can tell me if the web fails me.

For reference this car was sold for 90k in Australia when it was first released. More than triple the cost of the US equivalent.

So how much does it cost to export? I can't imagine that it could cost 35k to get it all legal. Maybe a good business venture.....lol

I’ve ran the numbers. Here is what it costs to import a fully optioned 2008 GT Mustang:

Mustang GT 08 $USD34,925 = $AUD 38,774
GST - $AUD 3,877
Duty $AUD 3,877
Shipping - $AUD 5,000
Conversion - $AUD 33,000
Total: $AUD 84,528

Exchange 0.8898

The biggest cost is the conversion from LHD to RHD. Its as much as the car! Anyone know a place in the USA that will do the conversion by any chance? If the conversion could be reduced to about 10k the car would be a lot more affordable.

So if you were to export them to Australia you would want to sell them for 90k minimum to make a profit. That’s a very expensive car for Australia and the market for it would be limited. I am not personally willing to spend 90k for a car. Any car.

The Australian Cobra was released this month. Only 400 made. RRP was 65k AUD. Cheapest I could find it for (some guy canceled his pre-order) was 90k. Highest I have seen is 120k.

I think I’d rather the 2k1 Cobra at 48k. Sounds sweet and way cheaper. And it’s a “real” cobra ;)
