3 Point Belts w/o removing headliner - coupe

Is it possible to install 3 point belts w/o removing the head liner and instead mounting the shoulder point to the body below the head liner in a coupe (inside from the back window)? If anyone has this set up, how comfortable is it? Also is there a good doner car for a black interior or should I purcahse a kit. I would rather purchase from a doner car due to cost, thanks!

ks65stang,
I'm in the same boat, except that I have a 68 Coupe, which I believe has mounting points from the factory. I think that your 65 does not have factory mounting points. If you are interested in find selection of belts, just Google Seat Belts.

I did it just a few months back.

Welded in a .25 inch piece of steel plate to the bottom of the package tray and bolted the seat belt retractor to it. Used all grade 8 fasteners.

The belt goes from the retractor over my shoulded across my body to the buckle end and then across my lap to the other anchor.

The retractor mount is above my shoulder, so no issue there.

And it looks very stock.

Good luck...

OK.....so you have no upper loop to reach back over your shoulder to grab? The belt is pulled over the seat, then over your shoulder and connect across your lap? Any pics and suggestion of what car you pulled from? Thanks.

Correct.

In a normal setup, the retractor is on the floor, the belt passes up to a ring bolted to the roof and then across your body. My setup does away with the roof ring and floor mount and simply moves the retractor to a point higher than your shoulder....the package board.

I used brand new belts from an internet supplier that JonK recommended...cant recall the name right now.

I will try and snap some pictures this weekend.

KS65stang I put 3 point retractable belts in my 66 coupe by taking the headliner loose around the door opening. I used rear shoulder belts out of a grand cheeroke. The retractors looks like a conventional one turned backwards. I mounted them in the quarter glass cavity and they exit in front of the window. They work great and look like a factory piece.

Thanks, any pics would be great! I know I can source GC belts real easy.

Yea, thanks for the pics! Thats exactly what I was picturing in my head. I will start looking for a GC w/ black interior. My other hobby is Jeeps anyways.

Anyone think its a bad I idea to omit the loop mounted to the area above the rear glass and just pull the belt over your shoulder. Its really better than just the lap belts I have now. I know this would make it more inconvenient but I'm just looking for additional safety for an occasional driver and I could always add the loop later if I have to work on the headliner?

Thoughts? Bigger saftey issue? Thanks!

If you do not have the shoulder belt secured above the shoulder level, you risk compression of the spin during an accident.......... I like the higher mount based on the fact that I am taller. One of these days I need to do that mod.
