300hp Camaro....V6

Didn't someone say that the V6 gets 26 mpg highway? I have gotten as high as 31 mpg in my GT...at 70 mph.

I think the Camaro is a little late to the game...and its sticker price and the price of gas will ruin its debut.

Oh well. LOL!

I guess a spanking is just a matter of prespective. On a positive point more musclecars from the Big Three brings out the best in all of them regardless of which make and model someone prefers.

Road and Track ran 13.00 in the Challanger... WIth the same bolt ons that would make your car keep up with that, the Challanger would be deeeeeep into the 12s. Just like the SRT8 Chargers. Desptie their weight, plenty of bolt on Chargers run low 12s all day. Even a 5.7 Charger will go mid 13s with just headers/x pipe/catback.

And why would a V8 Camaro be more expensive to insure and more rare on the street than a V8 Mustang? 99.9% of the Mustangs I see are V6s as well.

One thing that you are all forgetting though about this 300HP V6 Camaro, that is in the Mustang's favor, is that that is just a peak number. I garuntee you it won't have the same low end torque and through-the-range power than a V8 has, even with the same peak power. And peak horsepower is NOT what wins races, it's what sells cars. The V8 is what you have to worry about, not the V6. Let the V6 Mustang guys cry about it when that car spanks them.

Good luck with your Camaro purchases and I hope the best for you just be careful who you try to spank. Magazine road test and hearsay without actual real world proof might persuade you to make an investment that you might not like hardly as much after the papers are signed and reality sets in. I had a similar experience when I got all hopped up and ordered a '99 Z28 6 speed after reading some road test articles an although the car has some great features it wasn't nearly as good of a car that i had envisioned it to be. I should have drove someone elses first. I am not knocking the other cars and I hope GM and Dodge sells plenty. They just don't grab me in their current forms. Hopefully they will make a nose and rear body change a few years into the run and make the Camaro more like the '69. I have a soft spot for GM. Not so much for Dodge. And what I have seen at the track a Challenger(a $60K car with markup I might ad) is no faster or quicker that most GT on the street. A vette is cheaper, sexier as well and doesn't need aftermarket parts to kick ass if you can afford the $40k price. If it takes that much more money and even more money to mod a Challenger to outrun a Mustang or older F Body, ect. thats cool too if you like burning through money like there is no tommorrow. Have fun doing it because you have to have the newest car right then no matter what the cost. But because you got to have one doesn't mean others will share your gusto for one. This is a Mustang site btw and if I want to hear someone go on and on about a car that hasn't been built yet I know where to find the other web sites. Speaking of Challengers I am sure there will be up many for sale as used vehicles in the near future as economic and insurance realities set in and who knows other enthusiast might ponder purchasing one when they come down to a reasonable price. They might think its the greatest car ever or think they could have spent their money better somewhere else. If an unattractive over priced car spanks me occasionally thats totally fine. I have other hobbies and interest to put my money in besides having the fastest ride for the moment. A car has gotta have looks, function, reliability and performance for me to want to buy one. The new cars just don't have all those things for me but you might be more happy with one. You can have my spot in line at the particular dealership your Challenger or Camaro is at. I don't mind at all.

its still a camaro, still ugly, and still a POS. Woo it's faster, if i worried about it being faster, then i'd be driving a ford gt, not a mustang. The only good camaro they've ever made was gen 1's. I say as long as you thoroughly enjoy your car, then who cares if another is faster?

Those of us who bought Mustangs before the S197 never really bought them because they were fastest in their class. We were always outclassed by GM from the factory. But if that was such an issue why were our sales so good?

The bottom line is the Mustang is a great car. It always has and it always will be. No matter how tough the competition, no matter how big the horsepower disadvantages we've faced, we still retain the most important selling point. The Mustang defines motoring Americana.

Ask anyone on the street if they'd rather have a Mustang or Camaro I guarantee the vast majority will choose Mustang.

So maybe this Camaro will be faster... maybe it won't. But who cares? No matter how fast they are they'll never beat our look or our sound. They can come at us with everything they've got, but let me tell you a fancy engine doesn't mean a thing when you're up against an American icon.

This car isn't about speed. It's about the experience.

The V6 is rated at 26mpg. What is your GT rated at? IIRC, it's something like 23. So say you get 31 at 70mph. That's 8mpg over the rated number. Lets just be fair and say the V6 will get 8mpg over the rated number (probably closer to 5 but lets just be fair), the V6 will be getting 34mpg on the highway and will have 300hp and cost half of what it costs to insure our GT's.

I don't think gas prices will ruin it's debut. It is debuting at the perfect time for what it is now. Oil has been dropping for the past 5 trading days and gas is at 3.16 a gallon now (before taxes). In about a week we should see a little relief at the pump and with the Camaro coming out soon, that is good news for them.

Sticker price isn't much different than the Mustang, either. Maybe 2-3k more than what the comparable Mustangs.

I would have read everything you wrote, but the huge wall of text got in my way. All I got to reading was that you think it will be slow at the weight adn something about the SRT8 challenger being a 13.5 car with 425hp. The SRT8 300C runs consistent 12.9's bone stock. It was rated at 13.5. Put a tune on it with a CAI or something and it's a mid 12 second car.

I agree. I enjoyed the heck out of my 01 GT back in High School. And still enjoy my (stock) 92 GT even though neither one are/were close to my friends LS1's/03 Cobra's/S-197's.

This may have already been covered but I stopped reading half way through the thread...I'm seeing 300 HP but where's the torque?!?!?! Not only do you have a car with less torque but it weighs a few hundred pounds more, that's never good...for them!

I seriously doubt this car with get 26mpg being as heavy as the car with be and having 300hp. 26mpg is pretty good for a car like a Honda Accord.

uh.. i pay $4.49 cents a gallon for 93 octane... gas has not gone down.

if i wasnt at work id post this nice lil pic i made of all the stangs ive owned got to love history...

I've always gotten stangs because they have always been for ME the best BANG for the BUCK! look good and have good speeds at affordable costs. Even the aftermarket world is great for them and for a very little bit of money you can get moving compared to some other cars on the market.

Mustangs are an american icon, they look fast setting still. It really doesn't matter how fast you are, as there will allways be someone faster anyway. The new mustang just looks plain awesome, racing or just setting at the Micky D's. Ford -vs- chevy is the way it's allways been and part of the fun. The factories only do so much, then it's up to us to do the rest. For the 5 camero's you beat, the 6th one will give you a spanking and then it's back to the drawing board to beat #6, same with them. The important thing is to like your car to begin with, it will go as fast as you have money to spend on it. Thats the way it's allways been and allways will be. At the strip you watch the fox bodies pull the front wheels as they rip off a 9 second pass and you know they didn't come from the facory doing that, but thats part of the fun, pushing them to the limit. It's amazing just to see how far the small block ford has come since the 80's, they will run with the best of them. Our stangs will be no different, we will continue to push these mod motors to there limits. The mod motors are still some what young in thier developement, we have a long way to go. There's new stuff comming out every day for our engines, like comp cams new phase limiter cams, stroker kits and there's new intake manifolds in the works. Don't need no stinkin chevy to go fast, just some money and desire. The mustang GT is fast right out of the box, we just need to build from there. But even stock, there a fun, fast good looking car at decent price. We run with the big dogs with small displacement motors, we should be proud, anyone can be fast with big displacement engines, but we do it with small cubes, not just the mod motors, but the 302 as well. GO FORD!!!!!!!

Oil drops and it takes about 2 weeks for you to see a change at the pump. Oil rises and the next day you see the hike. It's just how it works. Next week or the week after and you should see a slight drop. Oil is at $126 today and dropping whereas it was at close to $137 a few days ago.

No it isn't. My friend has a 2002 Accord and if he isn't getting 32mpg on the highway he is pissed. He gets 25mpg or more in the city. My girlfriends Nissan Sentra gets 29mpg in the city on a regular basis (that's 11 more miles to the gallon than my car gets on the highway )

Right, and you hit the nail on the head. With the price tag of 15-20k more than a stang GT, I would hope that they could beat us at the track. It just seems like a waste to me when you could get a vette for the same price.

I really doubt they will care.

I think it's safe to say most people buy their cars because they enjoy them. Not because they think they are the fastest thing on the road and can run around stomping on "lowly" Mustangs.

With my '03 GT I've beaten 911's from a dig but I never think, "wow, that guy must be pissed!" More often than not the response from the high end car owner would be, "man, that's a pretty sweet ride!"

So yea, you might smoke a SRT-8, but I doubt the driver will really care.

The only time I ever cared that a "lesser" car beat me was when I was killed by a Civic on spray. That was embarrassing because I was 17 and thought I was hot stuff, but now I'd have a different attitude about it.

So....you're comparing a blown and modified Stang to a stock as a rock, out the door all motor SRT-8? The question is.....how much money and work have you got sunk into your GT at this point and what did you have to do in order to guarantee victory against an STOCK SRT-8 while voiding your factory warranty in the process?

Othewise, anyone with a stock or even mild bolt on GT shouldn't get too cocky...my car (with driver) weighs 4,100lbs and makes 15hp less than an SRT-8 and I have no problem what so ever with S197's on the street or at the track....and by no small margin either.

I am sorry about the long text. I forget that the public schools have been dominated by the Politically Correct powers that be and the goal of the schools in the last 15 years or so has been to make everyone feel better about themselves and abolishing higher level of achevements because it might scar someone else emotionally who couldn't make it. If I bother to post again I will try to make my responses as short as possible and try not to fluff them with any factual data or personal input. I believe what I see and not what I read in mags like C&D, ect. Might I suggest watching the Fast and the Furious movies since they are about a accurate as most car mage these days. To make anyone here feel better about their precious opinions about why their cars are better than ours here goes: Your are right. You are always right about everything.
