this thread is dumb. even though i do think this engine should've been in last gen's cars.

Besides guys we are seeing 280+RWHP dynos on stock M5 GT’s. That would indicate hp levels of roughly 330fwhp. So Ford underrated these cars and we know it’s as simple as a tune to get these cars at or very close to 300 RWHP without doing anything else.

You pointed that out the other day-underated. A few more goodies,a tune and that is some great power for the money.

The new mustang has great power @ the 2500 to3500 rpm range. The car feels strong at half throttle ,where 90% of all driving is done. The old 96-98 cobra felt like a v6 at those rpm's. It seemed like you were allways flooring it to have any fun. That was the problem with overhead cam engines.Ford spent time and money to get it right. GM is to cheap or lazy to develope a ohc engine for chevy. ( except the ZR1 with a $60000 price tag ) Most of the engine lineup is 1950's tech. That includes the re-designed love it or hate it corvette, judging from inventory more hate it. The only ohc that is close to a v8 is the vortec 6 @275 hp,but that engine has to be in the 5000 rpm range before the power comes on and has no fun factor at all.So who cares how much HP the auto company claim if the car doesn't feel fast or fun to drive. The mustang feels rock solid @ every speed and corner ,and feels fast doing it.That is what it is all about to 90% of all GT buyers.

300 is plenty for most people. If you want more, bolt it on yourself, wait for the Cobra or buy another car.

except that the GM pushrod engines have more power and broader torque curves. The modular nature of the engines makes it very easy to upgrade, swap and make big power - but I guess they got it wrong somehow. Sucks that the 50's tech works better

btw - GM has other ohc V8's as well.

The 01 z06 push rod pos can't go 1000 miles without using up oil like a 2 cycle weed eater.Call that high tech or no tech. Call your high volume corvette dealer and ask them how many ring jobs they do a week on that great engine. Keep a close eye on your LS1 it may be next weed eater. The word is Home Depot is making a deal with GM. Saturn has a V6 with a ohc engine , but why does it say Honda on it. GTO is made where and designed when? Keep buying the 50's tech and GM will be fat and happy .But expect more and maybe just maybe GM will get it!

Yea sure that’s why the 5.4L Cobra R motor in real world numbers made over 400hp at the crank when GM's top production V8 made similar numbers at 5.7L and now the LS2 had to bump up it's displacement to run 400 with no problems.....at least no problems so far.
And don't bother trying to use the SC on the Cobra to fuel your argument because it's just plain smarter to design a 4v motor with FI vs. going NA. Your going to get much more of a benefit pound for pound with boost with a 4v DOHC setup with FI than vs. an ohv setup.

well then, your point is absurd

nortcheez said:
The two negatives are missing my point that Ford came short of perfect when they only gave us 300HP as an option. Money is not an option if you are a true fanatic, given that a restores 69 Mach1 would cost more than a new model so why are we talking prices. I have always driven Ford, always loved the Mustang, and will never drive a GM. My point is that GM is pushing the bigger HP numbers when it comes to bringing back the muscle car. I understand more about performance than you could ever dream so don't bash who you don't know. Assumptions are usually brought about by inadequate individuals looking to improve their own self esteem by basjing others. The forum specificallly states no bashing so settle down folks. Forums are here for discussion and I am only stating that I want to see a better option with more horsepower, available to every dealership.
well then to be honest, you arent making any sense. this is not the top line mustang, it was never intended as such. from day one it was clearly understood that, further models to follow, such as the shelby, bullitt, boss, etc, will have more or substantially more horsepower. they are selling out the new model very very quickly as it is. It is appealing to lots of people who find 0 to 60 in the lows 5's and quarter mile times in the low to mid 13's more than sufficient. these times are extremely good for 300 horsepower.Plus the most important thing is the car looks great to young and old. the horsepower is the least important issue. there are already people like whipple supplying super chargers for it, as well as a number of other people who are suppling not very expensive mods that are getting the car into the 12's. Im not sure what you complaining about? the svt cobra will be a rocket and before you know it , it will be out. This is no different than the 60's. They certainly didnt bring out the shelby first.

"Sucks that the 50's tech works better "

no it doesn't. What are you talking about? lets go back to points + condensors and bias ply tires while were at it. the 4.6L is a small engine 281cuin. GM's engine only makes more power because it is larger. and not that i am defending the LS1 but it is by no means 50's technology. also, keep in mind the SOHC technology was around then as well and as proven by the ford 427 SOHC it was and still is a better design for developing horsepower and torque. BTW "NvigR8" why are you on this site? you obviously are not a mustang enthusiast and if all you can do is come up with reasons why you don't like it maybe you should go find people who feel the same way you do

What he said, plus: One thing everyone seems to be forgetting is that the current 300 horsepower rating is on pukey 87 Octane Fuel. Taking that into consideration, the power level is likely to achieve 350 horsepower or more once the engine parameters are adjusted for premium fuel.

By the way that 300hp is closer to the wheels latest dyno reports have shown 273 to 287rwhp. With tune 350 on good octane is RIGHT ON!

The latest issue of 5.0SF dynoed a bone stock GT and the best they could do was 245 RWHP. A tune gave them an extra 25 RWHP I think.

I agree, the later models will increase in HP. Also, Ford typically underrates their engines... probably to save us all with the insurance bill. I know my Cobra was supposedly 390 HP at the crank, but it dynoed 387 HP at the wheels... so that's probably 430 HP at the crank.

I think the key here is modding these engines. The mod motors have always responded well to mods. Once the aftermarket gets their act together, it will get better...

I am a total fan of the Mustang and am in love with the new body style but why couldn't they come up with more than 300HP. You can buy a Chrysler 300c or a Dodge StationWagon with 340HP. Jaguar even has a lighter 4.4L motor producing 300HP. Ford needs a major option like the all Aluminum Big Block from Chevy in the 60s (the option cost more than the car). I want a muscle car with real muscle. Ford came really close with this version but dropped the ball on the motor.

I find it un-****ing-believeable that people think 300hp is "not enough". Furthermore, it is not only "not enough" power, but it is so far below their expectations that they say Ford "dropped the ball". I have news for you: an 05 GT with its paltry 300hp will make a 340hp Dodge Magnum look like it's standing still.

I think it's just more or less, wishful thinking. I don't think any of the "not enough" people really thought Ford would make a 350/375/400 whatever HP GT...they were just hoping Ford would.

However, I don't know about you but 300HP (actually more like 320ish) really isn't "enough"...sure the car is plenty quick but now you've got 50-60 year old's being able to buy base 400HP C6's and they'll have no trouble pulling away from your stock 300ishHP Mustang or F-body. So yeah, you can beat the 30-40 year old velocity meets versatility husband with two kids and a Harley but you'd lose to the 60 year old just retired, cashed in my 401k, on my way to play shuffleboard grandpa.

So...IMO, 300HP is just fine (if not a little excessive) for most but for quite a few, they're going to want a little more but that's what the aftermarket is for.

I don't really think that's a valid comparison. You're talking about $40K sports car vs. a $25K pony car. Anyone that thinks the Mustang GT should compete with the Vette is crazy. That's what the more expensive Cobra is designed to do.

Fords been doing it all along... less hp.. faster ET times .
That how they market the mustang from day one , and will in the future.

H.p numbers are for Chevy and dodge guys ..

Let's line them up !

Well you also have to remember ford doesn't just make the mustang for the people who have been buying them. I'm pretty sure they try and attract customers who buy others brands too. Since most cars don't have 300 hp, it is way more than enough for most people. My current car is gti and has 172. When i get my 05 gt i will have way more hp than i'm used to. So most people feel 300 is plenty and if they don't then there is the aftermarket and SE cars like was mentioned previously.
