I just puchased a 86 coupe with a 4cyl, and trying to decide on a stroked 302 or stroked 351w. I think I'm going to keep it carborated. What do I need to know about the v8 swap? Also if I go with the 351w what size cowl hood will I need?

I have my 351w in my car under a stock hood. That being said I cut a hole in the hood and installed a scoop from a 83 mustang on it. It didn't need much clearence at all. I have seen people fit these under factory hoods.

how did you achieve this? I read your write up, very insightful. which motor mounts did you go with, and what intake did you use? thanks:flag:
The mounts were from Energy Suspension.
I couldn't use the 3/4" drop mounts due to the oil pan hitting the crossmember/steering rack

I used a Lightning lower intake and a Comp Cams polymer upper intake. I had to mill the upper intake down by .700".

This left me with hood clearance except for the little nipple on the top of the TB (pcv system vent to the filler neck on the valve cover), which rubbed a hole in the underhood insulation.

I'm rebuilding the engine now, and will be using a different setup but it should still clear the stock hood.
I have a tubular K-member from Team-Z, which drops the engine mounts by 1.00"
The intake is a standard vic jr converted to efi.
The intake elbow is from Wilson Manifolds, with a fair amount of milling done to make it shorter... I don't recall how much I milled.

I don't recall the exact numbers, but the math worked out so that the height of the vic jr setup should be roughly the same as that of the old setup with the lightning lower.
