OK, I bought a car from a guy who ripped me off and vanished. Now Im playing detective trying to find out what I bought.

He claimed it was a 351w engine with a 393 stroker kit in it. But, I just took the engine apart and the engine has 302 stamped on the top of it (under where the lower intake goes). So, its a 302 right?

well the cam is a comp cam part #35-518-8 for a 351. So it must be a 351?

I checked the comp cam web site and it says that it is a "Ford 5.0 Xtreme Energy EFI XE274HR Cam ", so it is a 5.0 "302"?

When you click on the link it says "Engine 1969-1995 Ford 351ci, Windsor, 8cyl. so I guess it is a 351??

Nothing is stock on or in the engine. The engine possibly has been over bored?? it is for sure greater than 4.0". I measures the bore with my calipers and i get 4.025" or 4.030", but the back of the piston says "Probe LW 40" so you would figure it has been over bored by .040 right??. The head gaskets have a 4.010" bore?? To make things worse It also has a stroker kit in it. but I cant accurately get the stroke with the calipers.

so let me ask this: can I get a 302 engine and put a cam made for a 351 in it? If not why? also can you use a 4.010" gaskes on an engine that is bored to a 4.020"-4.040"?

any help is appriciated.

thanks, filburn

302 on top of the lifter valley means it is a 302. I would also like to let you know that the High Output 302 camshafts are the same as 351 cams. I'm thinking that the motor was bored out 30 over since you said it is 4.025 or 4.030. Also are you sure the head gaskets aren't measuring 4.100''? If you take your caliper gauge and put the piston at top dead center and then mark it with a sharpie and then rotate it until the piston is all the way down. Measure from the top of the piston to the sharpie mark. I hope it helps. I also think if you call Coast High Performance and give them the piston number on the top of the pistons they can tell you what they are and for stroke and everything else.

The above comment on calling CHP is a good idea. Most stroker pistons seem to be fab'd specifically for one stroker configuration.

The block is a 302, as stated by the stamping in the lifter valley. The 302 can use the 351w cam, and vice versa.

All head gaskets are made oversize at 4.100"

Even if it is not a stroker 351w, it does sound like a nice motor.

See if you can find some markings on the crank and rods, to determine if they are cast or forged.
