I have a '65 and I was looking into putting a 351w and have stumbled onto someone in my neighborhood with a 69 cougar, which has a 2bbl 351w he's willing to sell for $225. It comes with with everthing from intake to pan. Is a '69 351w a good year? Can I still use my power steering?
My plan is to get a 351w, master rebuild, GT-40 heads, mild cam, I cant find any intakes, carb. and MSD ignition system, Hooker LT headers and Flowmaster exhaust. What would be a good hp estimation?

Yes, the block is a good casting, just make sure it's not cracked or already bored out to 040 or more. The GT 40 heads are no better than whats already on it, so I wouldn't bother with the swap. I'd sell the heads on ebay for a $100 and use that towards some aluminum heads like TW or AFR 185s.

The C9OE and D0OE 351w heads are the same basic casting as the GT-40 iron heads and I think the aluminum GT-40 heads use the same design. If both heads are ported the same, then they would flow the same. From what I understand, the stock GT-40 heads will outflow the stock 351w heads. I could be wrong on this.

Just bought the motor and it only has the crank pulley. Does anyone know what brakets & pulleys I need? And where or from what car can I get them from?

You need the pulleys and brackets for the accessories you plan on using. At the bare minimum you need an alternator bracket (the alternator already comes with the pulley) and the pulley that fits over the water pump. If you plan on using power steering or a/c you will need pulleys and brackets for those as well.
Google and ebay are tremendous rescources for information and parts.

According to Ford's 5.0 book, they're not the same castings. In developing the late80's GT40 heads, they first sent Jack Roush a set of E7's to port and polish. The result was a head that flowed more than the original 1960's GT40 head (this was a race only piece), so they went back to the drawing board and designed the late 80's GT40 head. So in effect, the 69-74 351W heads aren't in the same class as the 80's GT40 iron heads, the only thing they share in common is the valve sizes.

Yea, I don't know. Get Ford's 5.0 book by Al Kirschenbaum and read the chapter on the GT40 development, that's where my info comes from. If not just for that, this book is loaded with info on all the 79-2001 5.0's, not just the Mustang 5.0's. Summit Racing carries this book, it was put out thru Ford Racing originally.
