Which is better on a 98 cobra, how are at the track for a 1/4 mile run, how hard are they to hook, and do they affect top end, How do you guys like them on the streets and are they good from say a 40mph roll???? I was told 3:73 where the ideal gear but I'm thinking of going a bit higher for now.

:rlaugh:

What tool told you that. Might as well stay with the stock gearing then.
4.10's minimum. Fun street gear, but you end up shifting right at the end of the 1/4 mile so not so great for the track. I had 4.10's.

4.30 gear are a lot of fun...really wakes the car up. 1st gear will go up in smoke if you don't at least have a drag radial. I had the 4.30's installed right before I stored it for the winter, but the short amount of time I got to drive the car it was fun on the street....and I have a blower. Still, every gear is usable except first. I just upgraded to a 295 BFG drag radial for the street though and will be trying an ET Street at the track this spring.

4.10 MINIMUM. :nice:

99SVTAddict always gets to these posts before me and always gives excellent advice. 4.10s minimum. I installed 4.10s thinking they would be too much and frankly they are not enough. 4.10s are a lot of fun though. I'd recommend 4.30s.

I won't say what mustang specialist told me that but I will say they are highly repsected amony mustang owners in my area but I was told them that they are the ideal gear for racing and for everyday use and that they get great respones by people that went with that gear ratio. Now that my car is no longer an everyday driver I want to go with something more aggressive but I also heard that up top the cobra will also lose power. Is this true or just people fearing the gears????

dud no way bro i have 456 in my 99 cobra and i walked away from a z06 vette so thats all i have to say !!! but it takes pratice to launch on theses gears i can chirp 5th gear it took me about a week to master the launch , wen driving normal i just start out in 3rd then right to 5th i also get like 23 24 on highway and 18 19 city i love the gear , like everybody said dont fear the gear in a cobra peace bro

Go 4.30's....easy as that. You may need to go with an aluminum driveshaft to eliminate any vibe as a result of the gears...things are spinning a lot faster so the vibe is a common result. I have a custom aluminum DS and have 0 vibe at any speed.

You will just need some sticky tires...unless you like to do smoke shows.
Without good tires, don't bother with the gears.

:nice:

Everyone tells me different things all the time makes me worried about even putting a gear in. Some say if you do the gears, you should get better axles, and then a stronger tranny. But then on here it seems like no one has a prob, and I keep thinking 4:30's sound fun..

I think I'm going to replace myself with a robot that posts this URL in response to every thread with the word "gears" in it: http://www.svtoa-atlanta.org/cgi-bin/trans.cgi

Haha, I think 99SVTAddict is ready for a robot too. We'll write a 99SVTAddict simulator that tells everyone who posts that they need 4.30's and a T56. :)

Since Charlie is no longer around, it had to be Apex. :D

They're right, for a nice, well-mannered street car, especially if you're more road-race oriented than drag racing, as Charlie's was, & Apex is. Most drag guys are more willing to accept the drivability compromise & run a short gear. Once I get off my ass & get gears in my '97, I'll go 4.30's.

I am in the same boat. I am still stock right now and I'm tring decide between 4.30 and 4.56's. My best 60 ft's are 1.99 hooking on et streets at a 4000 rpm launch. What short times are you guy's getting with 4.30's and what are your rpms at 60mph?
